Is it just me, or is this neighborhood underserved when it comes to good Chinese food? Does anyone have recommendations on court or Henry? I've tried all of Smith Street's options, and am sick of soggy wontons and soupy moo shoo....many thanks!

it's not just you. they all suck.

save your money for trips to Sunset Park

Some people find Hunan Garden on Union palatable but it's still American chinese food.

Totally agreed. They are all horrible. At least the F train takes you to Chinatown in a matter of minutes.... It is not just that there are no Chinatown (in any of its NY manifestations) quality places, there are not even any good Chinese-American-standard type places.

But if there are any enterprising Chinese restauranteurs out there, please please please come to the neighborhood. I think with the demographic shifts in the area over the last 10 years, there's a huge market for good Chinese food.

i agree about the area being able to support something more genuine ... either a specific chinese regional style, or a mix of styles, but nonetheless not "americanized" or to a SIGNIFICANTLY lesser degree than at places we have now.

"Best Chinese" and "Cobble Hill/Carroll Gardens" are, unfortunately, a contradiction in terms.

There are some quite good Cantonese places on Avenue U east of Coney Island Avenue and a wide variety (with no subway exit and no place to park) along 8th Avenue east of the Gowanus.

The Times gave a rave review to weekend dim sum at Ocean Port, 6202 18th Avenue at 62nd Street, and I tried their regular menu, which was very good.

While I agree 100000% that there is no such thing as good Chinese in the area, there are times when I cave in and go to a "Chinese" restaurant in the area anyway. I put the word Chinese in quotation marks to reflect the authenticity of the places. If you want Chinese-style food, I recommend The Greens (in the Heights for vegetarian), the wonton & veggie soups at the Chinese place at Wyckoff & Court but none of their dishes, the egg drop soup from the place at Court & Pacific, some of the dishes from Sesame (although it is Thai), or anything from TukTuk (although this is Thai). Beyond that, you have to go to Manhattan or just switch cuisines altogether

I really love China Hong on Smith and Warren. It's not fancy - it's just takeout food - but the veggies are crisp and not overcooked and everything I've gotten there is pretty tasty for its category.
