"Ripley's Believe It or Not" would say: JAHN'S -there's one left in Richmond Hill near Myrtle Avenue / Hillside Avenue? (about 121st Street)...open late, and it's not as far as you'd think from Forest Hills.

Jahn's in Jackson Heights (81st & 37th Ave) also makes Ice Cream Sundae's. They're usually open until 10PM.

And you were so close to Eddie's Sweet Shop! Eddie's is a 10 minute walk from Baskin Robbins - head south on Ascan Street 'till you hit Metropolitan. It's about 1 block west of Ascan, on the corner near the Cinemart Theater. I can think of no better way to enjoy a lazy Saturday afternoon than to catch a matinee movie at the little theater followed by sundaes at Eddies. The decor of the shop has remained untouched for at leat 60 years, it's been run by the same sweet family for as long as I've been alive, and their home made hot fudge is out of this world.

Growing up in Forest Hills, there was a bit of a Jahns vs. Eddies rivalry going between the patrons. Jahns, farther removed (in Kew Gardens - if memory serves) were more like the Yankees - a little slicker and more polished and certainly further away. But a mint chip sunday with home made marshmellow sauce, whipped cream and fudge is an amazin' way to root for the home team.

you were in Rockville Centre and coming back to Queens, so you must have passed by Itgens in Valley Stream - not very far off of Sunrise Highway, on Central Avenue. 1950's style coffee/ice cream/candy shop. Outstrips Eddies by miles.

My favorite - a hot fudge banana royale with mint chip and java chip ice cream tons of heavy whipped cream and hot fudge on the side.

You know I was trying to remember the place I had read about on chowhound and driving my husband nuts in the car, I thought it was somewhere in the vicinity--but didn't have the info with me, thanks for the reminder, I need to put a little directory in the car so I won't forget places like that! Thanks!
