I know that other chowhounders have trashed Mango Thai on 7th Avenue in Park Slope but my husband and I recently had some very good vegetarian dishes from there -- spicy eggplant with tofu and galic seitan were well spiced and wonderful.

We've ordered delivery from Mango before and have always enjoyed it. Esp their tulip dumplings and the duck pad thai.

Wow, DeeDee, I'm really surprised. When I tried Mango Thai a while ago, it was pretty awful -- sickeningly sweet sauces, with no heat whatsoever.

Have you tried Thai Sky on Fifth Avenue, across from the Gate? I think that is much better. It's open for lunch and dinner.

I can't even picture where this restaurant is. Is it fairly new? The Gate is at 3rd Street and 5th Avenue so technically 'across' is the little Park but maybe there's something diagonal. I live near there but don't walk by there often enough apparently!

Yes, it's relatively new. The outside looks kind of generic and non-descript, which may be why you didn't notice it. But the food seems to be better than other Thai places in Park Slope (Lemongrass, T Thai, certainly better than Mango, I don't know about Rice on Seventh Ave.).

thanks yet again. yes, i've been definitely under-whelmed by any Thai restaurant (definitely Mango Thai, Lemongrass Grill and the one upstairs at Carroll which I forget the name of, the one further down towards 9th Street might be called Rice... that's underwhelming also) in Park Slope so I am happy to try a new one!

They all very dull choices. By the way the one in Carrol Gardens called three botie or something like that.

Exept for Sripraphai in Queens there is no other Thai Restaurant in NY in my mind. How can one even consider Skyy or Lemon Grass after visiting Sri...

You ask how anyone could even "consider" going a Thai restaurant other than Sripraphai?? Uh, maybe because some of us have full-time jobs, children, etc., and don't have time to go to Woodside every week.

I don't claim that Thai Skyy is as good as Sripraphai, I'm just saying it's a hell of a lot better than Mango Thai, if you're stuck in the Slope for whatever reason.

And while Sri may be the best, there are certainly other very good Thai joints in the city. Wondee Siam and Pam Real Thai in Manhattan are both very good. Klong, though the first time I was there underwhelmed, has come into its own. (Even if it does have an awful name.) I really like the pad see ew at Thai Sesame, the larb at Tuk Tuk. And on occasion I have even enjoyed the "Thai beef ragu" at Long Tan. So - while I have the time and means to get to Sri whenever I want to, there's times when I'd like something else. For the record, I have been underwhelmed with a number of dishes at Sri that I feell have been made better elsewhere, and I feel that the service has dropped since they moved into their new "hi-tech" space.

I can agree, though, that Mango Thai is not good at all.

I just wanted to make a clear distinction between Sri and the other Thai places. I also have a real job and even kids. That's why we're chowhounds. We take the time and make it a priority to go outside our nice little nabe.
