Do they even have food? Are we discussing bars now? And Red Hook starts on the OTHER side of Hamilton Avenue.

Where have you been? There has been plenty of discussion on bars on this board.

"And Red Hook starts on the OTHER side of Hamilton Avenue"

Relax. Moonshine is 1/2 a block north of Hamilton Avenue. Can't you cut her a break?

DeeDee, I suggest you check out Moonshine. It replaced an old neighborhood bar and is a fun place to hang out. They serve beer in mason jars and have lots of country tunes in the jukebox (if you're into that sort of thing). Really laid-back atmosphere, too.

they have in-the-shell-peanuts. and even a grill, for BYO meat, so yes, they do have food, and yes, it's worth checking out for the lovely cheap drinks and the bull dogs.

And I'll be trying Moonshine soon, whether it be in Red Hook or "Carroll Gardens West."

Its got a nice vibe. And doesn't Red Hook really spill well beyond its geographical borders. I mean, who would want to contain such infectuous spirit. I suppose we can name that area what we want: what about Brooklyn Battery Tunnel exhaust zone: BEZ for short

Personally I love the fact that my neighborhood doesn't have any cutesy name. The longer people keep calling it "that neighborhood on the other side of the BQE from Carroll Gardens, above Red Hook, kinda near the water, you know where that Mexican place is", the happier I'll be.

At least it ain't Bococa.

And the "Live Poultry Market"--somewhere on Columbia or Van Brunt, I think--saw it yesterday when I was running down there. A little spooky, but it made me happy to know i could buy my very own little chicken friend, if only I had a backyard.

Moonshine is on Columbia at Woodhull?? Mapquest was unclear and I don't get down to that end of Columbia much.

The locals--and there used to be locals here, before the big sewer project on Columbia St. caused the collapse of dozens of houses (where the new housing is now) and the end of the Columbo crime family's domination of the area-- simply called this neighborhood "Columbia St." or the "Columbia St. neighborhood". There were pushcarts on Union St. outside of the House of Pizza and Calzone, Latticini Barese and Ocean fish market. So I think Columbia St. it should be. In any case, enjoy Moonshine.

I think that before Robert Moses and his peeps built the Gowanus Expressway (originally known as the Gowanus Parkway), the area in question was generally referred to as Red Hook.

And to bring this back to food talk, grill your own meat there? Hmmm. That's a little crazy but I guess it could be fun.
