It's located at 34-21 34th Avenue, near Kaufmann Studios. Very nice Greek taverna fair whose speciality is grilled fish and meats. Also has wonderful mezze.

You can sit outdoors if the weather permits.

S'Agapo also makes a terrific vegetarian moussaka. If you want to stick to grilled fish Elias Corner is nice in good weather. It gets mixed reviews here but we went this weekend and had lovely whole grilled fish, striped bass and red snapper.

S'Agapo is my favorite Astoria Greek too -- though I usually stick with the mezes and dips, many of which are spectacular.

Oh,I wish I could agree.I went last week-the staff was friendly and generous. But most of the food tasted like it had been sitting around for too long, knid of dried out and lifeless.Maybe there's more turnover on weekends...

would also say that s'agapo's food is quite good, although the night my friend and i went our waiter was, for whatever reason, really putting on the hard sell. we were asked if we wanted dessert about three times or more. it got to be a bit much.

my astoria greek recommendation would be taverna zenon on 31st avenue. the prices are reasonable and the staff has always been very sweet to me since i started going there two years ago. food is still as delicious as ever.

enjoy your meal wherever you end up going :-)

Zenon Taverna is technically cypriot (slight different)

if you are looking for a gyro type place them I recomend Opa Opa! on 31st right off 30th ave. They have a nice garden in the back and it makes you feel that you are in greece. It is the most authentic greek restaurant in all of NYC.

Uncle George (broadway in the 30s) is also a great place but its defintely a place you would go only for the food because it lacks great decor and atmosphere.

If you want a nice sit down go to Karyatis but from what I hear they are currently away in greece watching the Olympics and I am not sure when they would be back

2nd best is Esperides on 37th street and 30th ave
and Christos Hasapo-Taverna which is more of a greek steak house on 23th ave and 41st street

for seafood try Galinis (sp?) on 36th ave and I believe its on 33rd street

s'agapo is just too americanized.

also about the being rude comment i read above; its expected when you go to a greek restaurant so dont take it personally

true, it is Cypriot, but still quite lovely, and worth the chance for unpretentious but fresh delicious food from the region....

On sweets: just had the baby walnuts in syrup for the first time, oh my god, how delicious!!!

i never ate at any of the other places you mentioned.

My fave is Ethos in manhattan.

to thatgreekchick: I wanted to email you but you were not accepting any emails. What is the best "sweet by the spoon?" brand preferably in fig or mandarin?

LOL. I never heard anyone use the direct translation.

Anyway, I have yet found a place that makes them homemade. An aunt of mine is Greece makes some to die for and we always try to bring back a 6 month supply until our next trip to greece and hopefully customs won't seize them.

As far as mass-produced brands the best in my opinion is Krinos but of course its not even great; I can not even eat it but its a bit better than the other ones. Rose is not that bad but the two flavours you were asking about are not decent. They are making it more like a preserve than what it is suppose to be.

I am trying to talk my uncle who owns a supermarket chain in manhattan to somehow import homemade ones from Greece to sell them here so I'll keep you posted if that ever happens.
