Well, I've just searched the board for some earlier comments on Indian food in Jackson Heights. I suppose my question should be - Is there ANY place to get GREAT Indian food in Jackson Heights at the moment?

No. But very good south indian at dosa diner, and very good north indian/pakistani at grand sweets. much discussion of both elsewhere on the board. Those are the two class acts, IMO, though a few places are just about to open.

I most often get the haleem with puri or roti.
I've actually had pretty good luck with the biryani, but maybe I have a strange taste for it.

I've been to both Dosa Diner and Grand Sweets several times. I think the Alpha-Hound has done a great job ferreting them out (I think I read about them first on Chow Alert).

Of the two, I think Grand Sweets is the more special place. First of all, don't put off by the name. G.S. isn't even primarily about sweets. It has a steam table featuring approximately 10 hot entrees, usually a few birianis, a few vegetarian options, and then meats with sauces -- even tandoori chicken on occasion.

Every time I've gone, at least a few things have been wonderful -- one time haleem, another time a fantastic fish with a huge bone running through the middle, a thick layer of skin on the outside, and perfectly medium-rare mystery fish in between, in a Bengali equivalent of brown sauce -- fabulous stuff.

Plus the folks who run G.S. are charming and enthusiastic -- maybe that's what the "Sweets" in the title refers to.

I always take bags of stuff out, too. G.S. offers excellent samosas and some form of potato croquetty appetizers. And a friend and I are hooked on doy, a sweetened mango-flavored yogurt dessert that G.S. sells in large containers.

It's cheap and good.

Whenever we've veered away from the basic southern Indian snacks at Dosa Diner, we've been a little disappointed (e.g., the thali lunch), but we like the dosas (especially the rava dosa), vadas, and iddlies, and for some reason, the sambar and cocount chutneys are poor. But there are compensating strenghts -- the podi that Jim raved about, and the tomato chutney.

No ferreting credit due. Dosa Diner's hardly low-profile, and I found Grand Sweets via a tip on this board (though that IS a sort of ferreting out, come to think of it).

Note: the tandoori chicken at Grand Sweets is ASTOUNDING...if (and only if) you get them to make it fresh. Go at off hours to increase your chances. And get to know which guy's the cook (he's often out front). He (or maybe the owner) is the only person likely to indulge such a request. I do NOT like their rice dishes, fwiw. Not the kidjuri (sp?), not the biryani....nothing.

The coconut chutney at Dosa Diner used to be real good. its deterioration is step one of the inevitable Jackson Heights Indian Restaurant Deterioration Syndrome I've written about.
