Went to Diner after a long time of not going, and what used to be one of my favorite restaurants was terrible. Lamb came in a minuscule portion, and the fish was plane and almost tasteless. The burgers were good, as always, but it definitively wasn't what it used to be. Did we happen to go on a bad night or is this always like this these days? Too bad-

I too have recently been disappointed, and if I recall, there was another thread on here in the last couple of months that expressed the same feelings. My food was just “eh”, and of all the things, we ordered Mojito’s that were simply un-drinkable. Had no taste related to any Mojito I’ve ever had. They were totally gracious about taking them back and we ordered something else, but still…a Mojito?! It’s really too bad, I don’t know what’s up with them, but they’ve been consistently good for so long, it’s a bit of a shock.

After a few months of similiarly disappointing meals, we've stopped going to Diner. The only things left there that are consistently good are the martinis and fries. After enduring bland or mis-cooked entrees and lackluster service, we finally decided enough was enough. We've been heading over to Dumont's for full dinners and Relish for burgers (I've actually always liked Relish's over the meatball-shaped Diner burgers anyway).

Generally consider it unseemly to join in on a bloody-chinned chorus, but couldn't resist adding my two cents re Diner. Have always felt this place had a little bit of the "Emperor's New Clothes" syndrome, and the giant meatball burgers drive me mad: there's a reason why they come on a bun, after all.
It is still possible to get a good meal here, usually the specials are okay, but I haven't eaten here in quite a while.
The new place next door, same owners, is called Marlow & Sons. There is a little shop out front with organic produce and high-end dry goods. Billed as an oyster bar, there are usually two offerings (one east coast, one west.) THe oysters, undressed, were okay--but not quite as fresh as you'd hope--at $2 per. The rest of the menu is a la carte picnic offerings. Cold cuts, cheeses, some cold fish. The salads were good, as was the cold octupus marinated in a sticky garlic sauce. Nevertheless, I found the design of the menu confusing (much to the scorn of our waiter), and some of the offerings almost insulting (noteworthy in oddness is the radish "vegetable" plate comprised of washed and cleaned whole large radishes with a lump of cold butter.) Ended up spending almost $40 for two people and left feeling miserable. Still, if you're on the Atkins diet and don't want to chop your own veggies or slice your own cold cuts this is the place for you.
I am a huge fan of Bonita, but the other two Diner-ventures leave me a little cold.
