So I'm looking to experiment with various woods for BBQ, mostly fruit woods. For lack of better ideas I found myself looking on eBay, then a wave of sanity washed over me, and I remembered the agricultural riches that abound in this area.

Anybody know where to find seasoned, preferably pre-cut fruit wood for BBQ in this area? I know you can get chips and pellets at the supermarket or hardware store, but I'm looking for a more direct (and therefore economical) source.

Lazzari sells wood at their plant on Industrial (off Bayshore) near the SF/Daly City border. You just drive in and go up some rickety steps where you can buy wood chunks and chips(different kinds,) mesquite charcoal and hardwood briquettes.

Thanks for that - according to Lazzari, a wide assortment of their products are also available at Monterey Fish and Verbrugge. But since I work in Daly City, I'll probably try to find my way over to the mother ship (at 11 Industrial, open 8:30AM - 4:30PM M-F).

And now for something complete different... I came across this link (below) today on a website for former Agilent employees. I have not tried the product yet, though I will once I get catching Salmon and Albacore.

Monterey Market has been selling bundles of fig wood for bbq, and Monterey Fish has had chips for smoking - the rickety steps at the Lazzari warehouse sound interesting though. I also occasionally see boxes of Lazzari almond wood at Beverages and More (also a convienient place to pick-up 40 pound bags of mesquite). As a certifiable pyromaniac I burn oak and mesquite and don't find that much flavor from fruit woods - although in an electric smoker the Lazzari chips have produced some great smoked fish. Your fire temp is critical as I'm sure you know, and sometimes a little soaking of the chips helps slow the burn of the gourmet wood.
