I had a stellar al pastor torta at Tacos Nuevo Mexico today. This place is wildly inconsistent, but I visit often because it's cheap and close to my apartment. It's hard to recommend anything without reservation, because one day the tacos will be perfect and the next, dried out and hard to eat.
Today, I ordered an al pastor torta, first time in about a year that I've had a torta from there. Previous tortas used hard sandwich bread, some had tough meat, pretty much nothing to recommend them specifically except the $4.25 price tag. They've gone up $.50, but offer ten times the flavor. The bread was great, i think it was fresh-baked, incredibly soft and delicious. TNM doesn't use real pastor, but their simulated grill pastor is really good on the sandwich. Today it was perfectly cooked, and the marriage of flavors between the pork, cheese, lettuce, tomato (i think), soft bread, and possibly some fried egg bits was amazing.
Maybe you should get over there today. Tonight or tomorrow it might be totally different.

located conveniently around the corner from Casa Bigskulls, Tacos Nuevo Mexico stands proudly on 5th avenue in Park Slope, Brooklyn, between 11th and 12th Streets. And yes, "wildly inconsistent" is the only way to describe it, besides, of course, "cheap."
