Mr. Wasabi (Bayside)
Mr. Wasabi is a small take-out/eat-in sushi restaurant at 42-32 Bell Blvd. in Bayside (718) 224-1133 that just opened two weeks ago (about two blocks north of Northern Blvd). By chance, I saw this restaurant tonight while waiting for my table at Erawan (Thai food) where there was a 45 minute wait. Mr. Wasabi looked so inviting, I ditched Erawan and ate there instead.
It is a very clean, modern looking restaurant with about 6-7 tables inside. The menu is made up mostly of sushi (nigiri and rolls) with some salads, oysters, udon and a bento box rounding out the menu. Most impressive of all is the pricing: a la carte nigiri was $1.50 to $2.50 a piece while the rolls, including special combination rolls, were $2.75 to $8.50 (for the Wasabi's Special Roll).
Our table had the Wasabi Special Roll, a Spicy Crunch Roll ($4.00) and a Bento Box. The food was very fresh and delicious. The Bento Box included the following, all for $9.50: miso soup, salad, 6 pieces of sushi, broiled salmon over rice, fried shrimp and dumpling. Everything was above average and it represented a great value. Likewise, the roll sushi contained large pieces of fresh fish, artfully presented on pretty serving dishes. As an added bonus, the service was very friendly and accomodating (they gave free miso soup to everyone at our table and did not charge for an extra bowl of rice for my son).
With a combination of great tasting food, great value and pleasant surroundings, I will be back (and real soon).

This place is by the WORST restuarant i have ever been to.
1) TOO MUCH MSG
2)the service is just inexplicably LOW-CLASS
you can just taste the overflowing amount of msg on the first touch of the rice on your tongue.
one of the servers tried to cheat me to get more tip out of her dirty selfishness.
If you do not want to die early and wish to spend money wisely, this place will disappoint you. -
