I just rented an apartment on 4th Place near Henry St. and I'm really excited to be moving into the neighborhood. I don't know the area that well -- what should I know about, food-wise? I'm more interested in old Italian restaurants that have been there a million years and a good place to by cheese than I am in the hipster spots on Smith Street, but I'd love any recommendations anyone has. Cavaet: I'm a vegetarian.

i recently moved to the area as well and came here for good advice. one place that was recommended to me that i go back to again and again (already!) is Caputo's Fine Foods (Court between 2nd and 3rd place...i think?) for some good cheese, yummy pasta, as well as prepared foods...even for a veggie (eggplant parm, etc). another place that was recommended to me here that i LOVE is Sahadi's (Atlantic just west of Court). they also have cheeses and the like, but i especially love the selection of bulk nuts, grains, etc. that can be bought there. i just don't get to Sahadi's as often because it's more of a hike and they are closed on Sundays...how annoying. can't recommend any Italian places as i haven't tried any yet, but i'm sure someone has some advice and you can always do a search...Italian restaurants in Carroll Gardens is a topic that seems to pop up again and again..

Try Goga's on Court St.-just south of 9th. Great veggie-motly vegan-scrambled tofu for weekend brunch is excellent. Live music at times; beer wine available.
