Persian restaurants

I can't find any persian restaurants anywhere. There are so many Turkish places and/or variations thereof in Brooklyn...but no Persian ones. Please help.

  1. Great Neck and New Jersey is where you'll find most of them. There's one on the Upper East Side called Persepolis that is supposed to be good, but not great. Never been there, though, as one of my Persian friend's Mom is a fantastic cook.

    Persepolis
    1423 2ND Ave
    New York, NY 10021-3311
    Phone: (212) 535-1100

No idea if there are any in the outer Boroughs or not but I can't really think of any neighborhood in the City that has a notable Persian population.

There's also at least one Persian restaurant in Douglaston/Little Neck. It's on the service road of the LIE just east of Marathon. IIRC, it's called the Persian Tea Room. I haven't been in, so I can't comment on the food. I think there is another one on Northern Blvd near Little Neck Pkwy, but I don't have an exact address or name. Sorry.

my aunt and cousin live near there and went soon after it opened and were not impressed (the persian tea room)

there is another persian restaurant on the service road to the LIE (Horace Harding Expressway) in Fresh Meadows called Patoug. We haven't been there in years but it was always very good in the past. We just tend to go for Turkish now a days instead.

I've been to Persepolis, and it was one of the duller culinary experiences I've had. Not bad-tasting, just completely drab. I would avoid it.

      3. There is a Persian (Glatt kosher) restaurant in Great Neck near the train station called Colbeh.
This Irish Catholic girl loved it!

There is also a Colbeh in Manhattan at I believe 6th and 49th.

          1. re: Jkos

The Manhattan branch of Colbeh is at 6th and 39th. Unfortunately, our meal there was terrible. Truly inept Persian cooking, bad service, high prices.

But others have reported liking the branch in Great Neck a lot, so we're planning to try it out.

        2. The website linked below includes a compilation of persian restaurants in NY.

You should note that a few of the restaurants listed at the bottom of the NY list are afghan in nationality. Afghan cuisine is also "farsi" -this is the cuisine that spread across south asia under the moghuls into India - so you can also experience polos, fesenjan and other dishes, in afghan restaurants.

That would be your best choice in Brooklyn, since Bahar, on Coney Island Ave, is quite good.

          1. I have seen two Persian restaurants out of Manhattan: one on the eastbound Horace Harding (the LIE service road)in Bayside, Queens, (sorry i don't know the name) and the other in Edgewater, New Jersey, down on River Road. Good luck.
