Natural Tofu-Sunnyside

I've been to Natural Tofu before, and am likely going tonight. My question is this. When you order a stew, they give you a raw egg. What is the proper use of this? Do you just break it into the liquid and stir it in--I've done that. Do you break it and let it sit there, trying to let it set? I've done that too. Do you try to hard boil it? I haven't done that. Help me out here.

    1. In Korea, I saw both the stirring it in, and also the sort of "poaching" method. However, I've never seen the hard-boiled method ...

        1. I like to break it in, wait a minute or two, then stir just gently enough to mix it in without breaking up the tofu and so that you can still taste the egg slightly. It boosts the creaminess just that wee bit more... Mmmmm... I sho do luv that soft tofu combo while sipping some icy soju. I may have to stop by there on my way home from drinking a few tasty ales tonight.

            1. Ditto on the cracking the egg into the bowl and letting it sit for a minute or even stirring it all in if you want little bits of egg. My first visit to a Korean place like that, I thought it was hard boiled and was about to crack it on the side of the table when someone nearby stopped me. Phew! Close call.

Anyway, is Natural Tofu in Sunnyside like most Korean places--casseroles with and without pork mixed in and BBQ too? Is it particularly good? I've never been to that one, although I've been to some places in Manhattan and in Fort Lee, NJ. Do you know a street address or cross streets for the one in Sunnyside?

no bbq at this place, but the tofu casseroles are terrific; many varieties, from all-veg to seafood mixes to "deluxe" with all manner of porky parts. they offer a variety of spicing options, from mild (kinda dull) to "very spicy," which is just that, although the burn doesn't kick in until after a few spoonfuls.

Though the soon du bu is their main focus, they do have a few bbq dishes as well as bi bim bap, pancakes, etc.

Last time I was there 2 tables got the pork hock and it was all my husband could do to keep me from going over and having a taste.

I love love love love this place and will never stop going, but has anyone noticed the excessive flies in the past 2 months? I've been ignoring it, but sometimes it kind of grosses me out. Flies=maggots in my mind and maggots=rice.

sorry for overlooking the bbq--will have to explore a little more deeply, i guess ;)

and i did notice a surplus of flies last week (my last visit)....not so many as to really put me off my feed, but it was a little disturbing.

Thanks for the replies everyone. But no one told me where this place is. Cross streets and train info helps!

                                  oops!

it's on 40th st and queens blvd....literally at the foot of the steps leading down from the 7 train stop at 40th street.

                          • Where is Natural Tofu?

                              1. re: Laurel

South side of Queens Boulevard between 40th and 41st Streets, next to a corner drug store. If you go by subway, take the #7 train to 40th Street station and you're practically there.
