From beer expert Bill Coleman (see link for Bill's page)

I am very excited to report that a great bar has recently opened up in my neighborhood. Spuyten Duyvil is located 359 Metropolitan Avenue..for those familiar with the area it is across the street from Black Betty.

This bar is so good I had to look at the receipt I had the next morning to make sure that I didn't dream it! It is small in size, with a kind of funky, thrift-shop look which is nevertheless very classy in feel. There is also a nice outdoor area in the back. There are very good wines (which I'm not qualified to judge), and there is an good selection of cheeses and pates as well. The juke box has a great selection of music.

At this point, there are only 5 drafts, but they are extremely well-chosen: Cantillon, Old Engine Oil, EKU 28, XX Bitter, Brooklyn Light Ale.

Then, you have an amazing selection of bottles from all over the world. For the most part, they represent the best selection of imports from B.United and Dan Shelton. The Belgian selection is actually organized by Flemish and Wallonian Beers! The owners, Joe and Kim, are very friendly and knowledgeable, without pretense. They will soon be adding a cask beer, and will probably add a few of the more interesting American beers (right now the draft Brooklyn Light is the only American beer they carry!!

They have been open 2 weeks--I'm actually kicking myself that I missed this place until last night, as they are literally 5-7 minutes from my house.

As far as I'm concerned, this is already one of the 3-4 best beer bars in New York, and they've just gotten started.

________

I have one additional piece of info. The next few beers about to come up on draft (thanks to Dave Levonian, a friend of the owner and a Babble Belt contributor) are:
1999 Gale's Prize Old Ale, Fantome Pissenlit, Post
Road Pumpkin Ale, Brooklyn Oktoberfest
and Burgerbrau Dunkel.

Nice list, eh?

Damn, I gotta leave Manhattan. This isn't fair or right to be deprived of a good drinking establishment. Especially when the prices in Manhattan are just plain obscene these days. I was at Muggs recently on a Sat night and the pints were $4.00. Now where in Manhattan can you get a pint for $4.00, much less a pint of good stuff, properly handled?

that's a bit extreme, but I respect your point. On the other hand, they're apparently working hard to get a cask system going.

We went last night and it was everything Bill Coleman describes -- absolutely fabulous! The selection is over the top big. I had a Flemish brown (can't for the life of me remember which one, we'd already had a beer and some Japanese small plates at Snacky's on Grand) and my husband had the Old Engine Oil. We shared a charcuterie plate -- you can mix-n-match cheeses, cured meats and terrine's/pate's -- very nice. It's going to get mobbed, I think they're going to need more space in no time. And it turns out that Spuyten Duyvil is a somewhat traditional name for bars in Belgium, but that was a coincidence for the naming of this bar! GO go go!

Well, the charcuterie is all, but it's an ample enough selection and of course it goes perfectly with beer! They serve a little dish of sliced baguette and crackers with it, and a really really hot mustard, I'm totally blanking on the name but you'll know it, and a sweeter mustard (NOT a honey mustard, thank god) along side, and it's all rather.....heavenly.
