Does anyone know if it's possible to get S & S cheesecake mail-order?

I know there are many other cakes available, but I recently read about S & S and don't get up to N.Y. that often (I'm In Wash., D.C.).

Thanks,

Searched google for S&S cheesecake (never heard of it until today). It sent me to digitalcity.com, to a board that asked "What's the best cheesecake?" Learned of S&S cheesecake factory on W 238 St in the bronx (although there were a lot of votes for other cheesecakes too). Went to "Zagat's NYC Marketplace" (2000-1 version) and found:

S&S Cheesecake
222 W 238 St (betw Bailey Av and Broadway),
Bx, NYC
718-549-3888
open M-F 6a-3p

Mail Order: 718-796-1060.

Even though there's a mail-order number, Zagat's claims that they don't take credit cards (presumably they will for mail order).

One of the digitalcity.com postings claimed that S&S is kosher. Can't confirm this. In fact, I'm not even sure if this is the right place, or just an eerie coincidence. If it is the right place, the #1 subway (but not the #9) stops at 238th & bway.

Your address and phone numbers info is correct. I called the main number and got a recording that said they're on vacation till Aug 25th, but the store is stocked and what the mail order number is.

A 2 lb. cake is $32 2nd day air to D.C. and a 5 lb. cake is $42. Next day delivery is $10 more. Not sure if I'll order now or wait till they re-open, but $52 for a next day 5 lb. cake is about what I pay for cheesecakecity.com from California.

I recenly read that S & S was Pres. Nixon's favorite and he always sent Secret Service men to the Bronx to buy them when he was in NYC.

Thanks,

K

p.s. Many years ago I worked in a restaurant that stocked Al Nicolosi's Mother's Finest cheesecake from Brooklyn. I did a search and found nothing. Ever heard of this?

I recently went to the bx. to get an s&s cheesecake for my son. Had heard it is "the best in the city". We were disappointed. It is a perfect example of a ny waterbath cheesecake w/ light grham cracker dusting on the bottom and sides. The side crust is made up of a cake-y yolk mix and the cheese cake it self is made w/ egg whites. I'm sure they come out exactly the same every time. We're partial to a full graham cracker crust, w/ a little lemon zest in the filling. A good example is cousin johns cheese cake (on 7th ave in park slope). If you order one (or the marbled version) and get it fresh, it is outstanding.

Do you really think Cousin John's makes a better cheesecake than S & S. Thats like saying Lemongrass is better than Sripraphai (See above post). Jeez.

Lemongrass rest. does suck. As for cheese cake I perfer the full grham cracker-butter crust. And cousin johns makes this, also their cheese cake is not as dry as s&s. You should order one and try it. I do not dispute that s&s makes a 'perfect' cheese cake, it just leaves something to be desired. Now Juniors cheese cake.... that reputation is marketed and well hyped. I wouldn't go out of my way for one of those cakes.

ps. s&s also makes a choc. mousse cake. Has anyone had it?

The S & S version is the authentic NY original and I've never had a better NY cheesecake. They are made by serious orthodox Jews who don't fuck around and the cheesecake is not dry it is perfectly balanced. I haven't been to cousin john's in years bec/ everything has alway's been so lackluster.

I've never had Cousin Johns, and while I appreciate (translated: will eat with equal passion) graham cracker crusted cheesecakes, I too find S & S superlative. HOWEVER, it has no shelf life to speak of. As soon as it reaches the right temperature for serving (it used to be sold fresh frozen, but now just freshly refrigerated) it must be eaten. Otherwise, it becomes heavy and dry and just a bit better than Baby Watsons. That's why I only buy it from their factory on 238th east of Broadway and serve it before days end.
As for Juniors, it's okay, just overhyped.

I am going to try to take a stab a this. I don't know anything about a Brooklyn Al Nicolosi's Mother's Cheesecake. But I do know about a Cinnaminson, NJ Al Nicolosi's Mother's Cheesecake. When I was a kid, my mother used to teach piano. Some of her students were the children or child of Al Nicolosi who made cheesecake. To the best of my knowledge he called the Mother's Cheesecake or Mother's Kitchens or something like that.

Sometimes my Mother would come home with Mr. Nicolosi's cheesecake. Sometimes more than one. We all loved his cheesecakes. Being one of nine kids, this was really a treat! Nicolosi's cheesecakes were the best in the world!

Years later, I was in college in San Diego and was surprised to find Nicolosi's Mother's Cheesecakes in a newly opened Deli downtown. I was delighted to find that the cheesecake had achieved national distribution, but I didn't know how that had happened. I purchased the cheesecake then, and it was a good as I remembered it.

In searching the net - it appears that Mother's kitchens may have been acquired by Rich Products Corporation. See links below.

I will have to check out my local stores to see if this product actually takes like the Al Nicolosi's Mother's Cheesecake of my childhood, the best in the world!
