I have just moved to Brooklyn and am curious to hear what people feel is the best restaraunt on Smith Street. I have tried Banania Cafe and the Brooklyn Grill (ok - its on Atlantic Ave) and have been very satisfied. But I just cant help but wonder if there is something better...??

There are only about a gazillion posts on Smith St further below, but I believe the general consensus is something like...

"upscale" restaurants:
1. The Grocery
2. Restaurant Saul
3. Savoia - although it's really not that upscale...
followed by, in no particular order, Bar Tabac, Smith St Kitchen, Banania, Patois (hated by many but liked by me), Paninoteca, TukTuk, Sur, etc. - none of these are great but none are horrendous, either.

For informal dining, you can't beat Zaytoons, which is a cheap little Middle Eastern place.

I have to add for cheap and plentiful eats-- the oft-overlooked Vinnie's Luncheonnette, where many good, if generic, Italian specialties are served with lively personality, usually with a side of pasta, for under $10 a plate.

The dopiaza at Raga is just that, and Halcyon has a very satisfying grilled cheese and tomato sandwich with salad. I can't even remember what I ate at Patois or any of the other places.

Been living off of Smith for three years - and I like Le Petit Cafe for a quick bite or coffee or cake or panini or salad. It is on Court and Nelson. The displays in there are really something - presentation is impeccable. They make a dynamite vanilla chai tea too! I asked one of the owners how they get such amazing cakes and treats in there. He said that one of the main suppliers is a freelancer who usually works for Gourmet and Bon Appetit. No kidding! There are layer cakes that are just something else. Things I like there - buffalo mozz., tomato and basil AND eggplant, fontina and squash (with rosemary) panini, blueberry pancakes, roasted red pepper, portobello mushroom salad with goat cheese.

I agree. I love Le Petit and especially their cakes and cookies. Their coconut cake is the best in the city, and those frosted raisin and nut cookies (Scicialian?) and some coffee are a great combo. Le Petit also has a outdoor back area that is great in the summer.

I've been consistently impressed with Robin Des Bois (smith btw baltin and warren) for its tastiness and affordability! Their upside down-cake of the day is always good, as is their Oeufs au Gratin for brunch. You should definitely opt to sit in the breezy garden in the back.

Robin des Bois (Sherwood cafe), Banania are both good - i do not think Bar Tabac is so great, but i'm glad it's there as a "hang out" place. personally, i find the pasta dishes at Pepe Viola very appetizing for light fare.

If you're into going over to Atlantic Ave., Downtown Atlantic is very good - but don't get the pasta.
