Hi 'Hounds,

I recently bought at Whole Foods at Franklin, and enjoyed, an orange box from Italy of Via Nalone (spelling?) rice for risotto. The Seafood Risotto recipe on the box, if somewhat roughly translated, was fantastic. I used up the rest of the box in other risotto preparation, and when I went back to WF to get more, it was it it were never there. I asked two different employees who I managed to track down, and neither of them had even heard of it. I brought the second one to the rice aisle to show them where it was when I first bought it a few weeks ago. He looked in vain for a shelf marker for it, and he seemed to think that I dreamt it :)

Did anyone else buy this product at the Whole Foods on Franklin? If so, has it been moved? If not, where can you buy it in SF now?

It is a type of short grain rice popular in the Veneto called Vialone Nano. It yields a creamier yet more al dente risotto than Arborio and IMO is the best type of rice for risotto. A.G. Ferrari's sells this type of rice. Another rice which is better IMO than arborio is Carnaroli.

Both Pasta Shop locations ( 4th street Berkeley, Rockridge/College Ave, Oakland) carry Italian rice from Principato di Lucedio--including Vialone Nano, in cloth bags. I like the Vialone Nano, (especially for rice pudding), but my favorite is Carnaroli. Whole Foods just started to carry a Carnaroli rice "Aquarello", organically grown, from a small farm in Italy---its part of a new "authentic food artisans" line. The rice is in 500g vacuum-sealed tins, and should be at all the WF places. The orange box you referred to may have been the Bertolli brand, and I believe I have glimsped it at Rainbow Grocery---which has a great selection of imported Italian yummies.
