I am looking for something that is uniquely Brooklyn to be shipped off to a friend as a gift. I was thinking of Jacques Torres Chocolates but am not sure if they can survive being shipped at this time of year. Any suggestions?

If you're not sure if they can be shipped, why not just call and ask? I'm good friends with one of their business managers and she tells me about all the chocolate they send all over the country all the time. They are very careful to allow for the weather conditions all over, heat, humidity, everything! It can't hurt to ask.

Also, to second what the other poster said, if in doubt, why not their hot chocolate? It's absurdly good.

Thanks for the advice. I called and at this time of year they only send out products next day air and the person has to be present to receive the package otherwise they might melt. I ended up sending Fat Witch brownies instead.

I just saw your post--can't believe no one availed themselves of the opportunity to describe this true new York original.

Blackout cake--sometimes billed as "chocolate blackout cake" or "midnight blackout cake"--is a two-layer chocolate butter cake, usually devil's food, filled and frosted with a fudgy frosting. The entire frosted cake is then covered with cake crumbs. Properly, it's shape is somewhat domed.

It got its name in tribute to the great electrical blackout of 1967. WHether it's a "new" name for an old cake or whether it was created then, I don't know. I always identified it with Ebinger's, but I have no idea if it was there creation or not.
