Just wanted to post about my amazing meal at beso on father's day... we were actually on our way to the new Indian but weren't thrilled with how it looked from the outside so checked out the Beso menu on our way.... Everything looked so good so we stopped...

It was mostly empty, which is a shame and the service was terrible... it took 1 1/2 hours and the place was empty...

BUT - everything was awesome - We had plaintain chips (so delicious) with guacamole (so fresh) and Shrimp ceviche - (so fresh and an endless number of shrimp!); Afterward, we had Latin Fish & Chips & my husband had a cuban sandwich... They made a plain quesadilla for my picky daughter and she loved it ... For dessert we had their hot chocolate with churros... We all shared and it was plenty;

It's been a long time since I had such a satisfying meal from start to finish and I wanted to share it here....

Wow! I've always enjoyed the very filling brunch but have yet to go for dinner. Your report will definitely push me towards going. I love the churros.

I also love the brunch there, but have been reluctant to go for dinner because it's always empty - something about being the only diners in a restaurant kind of gives me the creeps. I know that I should let the good food there be the deciding factor on whether I eat there are not. . .

never understood this thing about fear, creepy, must be bad concept about not crowded restaurants. Many new yorkers feel if they are not served in minutes, this place is a no no, as one intelligent chowhound previously stated, "anyone can make fast food but good food takes time." personally a not full restaurant will attend to you faster and food quality probably will be better, probably many hounds will differ with me but then thats what the site is about!

Not to play devil's advocate, but look at India House ;-) Sometimes (although not always) a fear is warranted. It depends on the restauranttoo; I've had great service in crowded restaurants (Japonica) and awful service where I was the only diner (Coco Roco).

I enjoyed your report, but I have to point out that good food takes time. The reason your plantain chips were so delicious is that they were probably freshly cut and fried AFTER you ordered them, not pre-cooked and re-heated (much faster). Same thing with the guacamole: made fresh after you ordered it.

Anyone can make food fast. Making it good takes time.

it wasn't waiting for the food that took time - in fact the appetizer came in good time after the free arepas that i forgot to mention... the entree took quite awhile and the waiter never cleared the dishes or asked if we wanted anything else... my husband had to wait until the entree came before he could get another beer and I ordered dessert from the water guy cause the waiter wasn't coming back...

Just wanted to add my two cents: There is a huge difference between slow service and bad service. I've never been to Beso for dinner (and based on the review think I might have to give it a shot) and I, too, love their brunch. However, I have been victim to poor service there: wrong orders, finding it impossible to get the attention of waitstaff, having to wait 40 minutes for coffee. I appreciate that everything, from the chips to the juice, is made to order. However, the last time I was there and our juice didn't arrive until after our brunch, we were told that it was b/c the man who was cooking the meals was also the juicer. Seems like a flawed system to me!

I believe you can find Beso between Union and President.

Big Bill does bring up a good point, though. Everytime a new thread on a restaurant is started, it seems that the discussion gets going before that one crucial detail is offered. Maybe an address could be offered at the open of each discussion? I apologize if this sounds out of line.

As to Beso, I must say that the one time I ate there, I certainly enjoyed the meal. But I'm a sucker for garlicky greens and tender meats. And the churros with the hot chocolate were a decadent thrill.
