Some familiar local names were winners at this year's James Beard Foundation Awards, given Monday in New York.

Northern Californians who won in national categories included Zuni Cafe (outstanding restaurant), the French Laundry (outstanding service), Zuni's Judy Rodgers (best general cookbook; that's her in the photo below) and Anchor Brewing's Fritz Maytag (outstanding wine and spirits professional).

Among the winners of regional awards was Terra's Hiro Sone (best chef, California). And one of five restaurants honored as "America's Classics" was Duarte's Tavern in Pescadero.

A couple other local angles: Marion Cunningham (the revised "Fannie Farmer Cookbook") won the foundation's lifetime achievement award, and Hubert Keller of Fleur de Lys was inducted into the Who's Who of Food & Beverage in America.

No details on the most outrageous gown, the goofiest acceptance speech, or who spilled what on whom. For that you'll have to watch the show, June 28 on A&E.

I was driving by Chez Panisse yesterday when I saw a huge wreath of garlic out front and thought, hmmmm, this must be garlic week at the restuarant. Then it hit me that it was a peace sign made from garlic. I suppose that WOULD ward off W. I guess Alice was banned from the awards.
