We just got an ice-cream maker (huzzah!) and I want to make real vanilla ice cream. Does anyone know where I can buy vanilla beans and not spend a small fortune? I havent' seen them at the Co-Op, but does Sahadi's carry them?

The co-op *does* carry them...you'll find them in the bulk spice section, near the bottom. I think there may be 2 kinds: organic and from Sahadi.

And so yes, Sahadi has them too.

Drat, I just wrote a long answer and erased it by accident. Short recap is: I buy all my vanilla beans for ice cream (and anything else) at Penzey's spices online:

Good prices, good products, useful info. I have no affiliation with them, just a somewhat regular customer who makes a fair amount of vanilla or vanilla-based ice-cream.

You know Penzy's has a store in Grand Central Market?

Costco has vanilla beans at a good price.

Trader Joe's on Atlantic and Court has affordable ones.

go to ebay, the arizona vanilla company sells their less attractive beans for ridiculously good prices. by a bunch stick em in the freezer and never worry about buying a vanilla bean for more then a dollar.
