real good astoria italian sausages
for our almost rained out first bbq of the season yesterday, we invited some friends for steaks and suasages. i bought the sauasge at joe's pork store, on ditmars blvd btwn 37th and 38st. i've been eating his stuff all my life, growing up in the neighborhood and i highly reccomend you check this place out. joe is long gone but his 2 sons took over the (tiny) store and continue to run it just like it always has been. you know, the type of place that probably won't survive another generation, the kind of shop that was common throughout nyc nieghborhoods but is vanishing all too fast. so the sausages...they make a really great cheese sausage (my fave) with hunks of provolone, a fennel laced sweet sausage and a spicy hot, red sausage. they also make sopressata and dry sausages, i love the hot version of the dry. pancetta, pork ribs, shoulders and loins are in the refrigerated cases also along with smoked and fresh mozzarella and fresh ricotta, and assorted canned and bottled stuff.. that's it, no beef, no chicken, just pork and cheese, ya gotta love it. this store is a treasure and i always like to support hand made food, by people who love what they do....
so throw some sausages on the grill next time you bbq and you will not be disappointed.

Joe's Pork Store on Ditmars Blvd & 37th Street in Astoria is the place to go for the best sausage you've ever had... for me it wouldn't be a Saturday afternoon without a stop at Joe's for a pound or two of the freshly made skinny sausage and a chunk of fresh mozzerella! I grew up in Astoria and have been eating Joe's sausage for as long as I can remember... it was always a stop on my Grandmother's daily shopping trips - and we all know how Italian grandmothers strive for the freshest and the best! The sawdust on the floor and the old-fashioned cash register add to the store's charm - as do Joe's two sons who now run the store - they are a delight to chat with and you always leave the store with a smile on your face!

Joe's is absolutely amazing. I fell in love with the place the first day I walked in, the guys who run it are sweet and friendly and the sausages are terrific. The parmesan is wonderful, the only problem I've had is overcooking the sausage with provolone and having the cheese leach out! Of course, the fault is mine not the lovely sausages.
