I don't spend a lot of time on the outer boroughs board, so I might be stating the obvious here. But a friend of mine brought some mini-Italian pastries from Monteleone's to a dinner party I recently had and they were wonderful. I'm a tough critic, as my mother has worked in Italian bakeries for the last 30 years. There's a real depth of favor in their cannoli cream and chocolate icing. Delicious.

I agree! The mini sfogliatelle are excellent, and the pignoli cookies are really good too. Those are my two favorites, and I don't even like most Italian pastry that much.

I think Monteleone is the best traditional Italian bakery in the neighborhood.

Monteleone's ALSO has the best italian ice in the neighborhood, IMHO. At least if you like the classic flavors, like chocolate, or "cream"(with nuts!) , or lemon (with real lemon peel!). Actually I must admit that their fruit flavors are usually too sweet and not like the fruit at all, but those others I mentioned...oh, man.

For $1 you can be very very happy on a hot day...and those will be here before you know it.

Ask them to put a scoop of the chocolate in their iced coffee. It's an American thing, I know, but really good on a not day.

I don't understand the lines at Louis G's two blocks away.
