I'm as of this moment in quite a food coma induced by Memphis Minnie's in the Lower Haight. Great ribs, brisket, pulled pork.

And good fried peach pie for dessert.

And good homemade chocolate chips.

Wear your baggiest pants.

I am a chicago hound, just doing a little research for my trip to SF next week. I am in shock that there were no threads on Bo's BBQ in Lafayette. This is the best "Q" I have ever had, hands down, and I've eaten a lot of BBQ all over. The beef ribs (which I normally don't like) are incredible as is the brisket and the links. The place is a bonafide treasure and is, to me, weel worth the Bart trip + cab I will be making from downtown next week. Bo is originally from Chicago and reallynknows what he is doing and he and his wife are wonderful hosts to boot. he uses all Nieman Ranch meat. I highly recommend it. The place is on that Top 100 list.

There's something disturbing to me about using Nieman meats for barbecue -- I mean, the whole cooking style (spicing, long smoking) evolved around making bad, tough cuts of meat edible. I prefer more honest, hole in the wall places, like Johnson's or Cliff's, that take pride in their sauce and cooking process rather than the price of their ingredients.

Well, I've been to both memphis minnies and cliffs this past week and have to say that both had their pluses and minuses.

Let's go by categories:

Ribs: very good at cliffs, good at MMs. they were more tender at cliffs, probably because they have baby backs there. MMs didn't provide enough sauce also, and that's not fun when you're down to the last dry rib.

Links: they were not good at MMs. dry and too thinly sliced. not enough sauce for them either. cliffs was out of links. darn.

Greens: way too much mustard/other tangy flavoring at MMs--I couldn't eat more than a few bites without feeling like I was eating straight out of a mustard jar. Fresh and tasty at cliffs.

Beans: I like sweet baked beans, and both MMs and cliffs had pretty basic savory beans. Both were ok in my opinion.

Dessert: I like fruit pies after bbq. MMs highlight for me was the fried peach pie. Very good. I didn't get any of the cakes at cliffs b/c I don't really like cake that much. Wish they had fruit pies or cobbler.

Price: MMs was ridiculously overpriced. It cost $20 for a ribs/links combo with no drink. Cliffs was half that with a drink, but no links (would have been about $13 with a link).

I am glad to hear that someone new has visited Cliffs and came away satisfied. Cliff's Alabama ribs are my favourite ribs in San Francisco. How much do I love Cliffs? Before I moved away, my last lunch in San Francisco was takeout from Cliffs. I almost cried when the lady behind the counter gave me one of their frequent customer cards. I like Cliff's sauce enough, but I am not as much of a sauce man--it's those smoked rubbed ribs that I covet. My mouth is just watering thinking of them. If you go on a Friday (and Saturdays, I think), then try a cup of gumbo. It may not be cheap but it is worth every penny you will spend. I expect to be returning soon to San Francisco for a short visit. You can guess where I'll be going for BBQ.

I recommend that you give Memphis Minnies another shot. IMHO their special BBQ item is their brisket with some of their red BBQ sauce. It's as good as the brisket I had in Texas. If you need more sauce, ask for it, they will give it to you. It's been recommended on this site previously to get take out from Memphis Minnies and go to Toronado across the street for an accompanying beer. If you drink beer, this is wise advice. Do it and you won't be disappointed. Toronado has a great selection of quality beers.
