My husband and I went to Pearson's Texas Barbecue in Queens recently and we were very impressed by the juicy, smokey meat. Although it took us a while to realize that the bar and the barbecue are different business (so we had to pay seperately for food and for drinks), we somehow got our beer and meat successfully.

After our visit to the bar/restaurant, I read that Pearson's used to be somewhere else, had to close because of complaints in the neighborhood about the smoke and smell, and finally moved into the Legend's Bar.

Now I'm curious about the former Pearson's, which of course I've never been to. How did it look? Was it big? Was it as neat as it is now or different? If anyone knows, please tell me! Thank you.

The former Pearson's was a small storefront (with some additional tables outside, in back) on an industrial side-street in Long Island City west of Vernon Boulevard. Also, for a short time they had a place on the Upper West Side of Manhattan (with, I think, the food trucked-in from Queens), but that place closed after a fire.

The LIC Pearson's was a small building, one floor, covered in white stucco, with wood stacked on the north side. I like both, but the old was better.

The old place had outdoor seating which was great, but this place has draft beer that goes with the food, and is much much cleaner, the other place was a little scary at times. They were closed down because the neighbors complained about the smell. I hear that they put in a very expensive system in the JH place. I also hear they are trying to get a store front in manhattan and ship the food from queens, best shot for juicy meat still be in JH. Only problem with this place they only open for lunch Thur and Fri.during the week.

The old place had a more beat-up, down-homey feeling, but I have to agree about the advantages of having beer on tap, not to mention having the place within walking distance of home. The block the old place was on was only quasi-industrial: there were a number of small houses on the block, an enclave that looked like the neighbors might have been there for a very long time, long before anyone thought to build luxury buildings or open French bistros around the corner, hanging on amidst the trucks rattling through.

Legends bar is nice enough, I suppose, but since I try to avoid cig smoke when it's feasible the smoke's always a negative factor for me. (Not that it's so intense there, I just prefer not to smell smoky after a meal. Not that I'd kick a trip to Paris out of bed.) At one point their brisket was ambrosial, but there have been several recent downhill reports on this board. I can't say personally, don't think I've eaten there in a year.

As for the shipping food to Manhattan, there was a discussion of this here recently. Maybe it was on the Manhattan board? Apparently the brisket is exported to Rodeo Bar on 3rd Ave.

I've had the brisket twice in the past month and it's been awful both times--about 50% gristle. The odd thing is that the brisket was amazing less than a year ago. I'm not sure what's going on there, but I've noticed a lot of negative reports on the place in the past few months. Could they be under new management? I'll try to check with local sources.
