Does anybody know whether the flyer posted near Louie G's on Prospect Park Southwest is true? It says that Louie has banned breast feeding on its premises. The place was closed when I saw the sign, or I would have asked. It's hard to imagine that they would make such a boneheaded rule, just from a business perspective. Most of their customers are parents of young kids, many of whom were probably breast fed. I stop in there once in a while (even though I rate their icecream just average) but I'll definitely get my sweet stuff elsewhere if they're really hassling women who are breast feeding.

Wow, I didn't know about the breast feeding thing. Pretty bad. I'm surprised you all have beef with the product, though. I've never tried the ice cream because the ices have always been fantastic. In particular the lime, cherry, chocolate mousse, and watermelon ices are all great (at least at the 7th ave, 9th street location).

Agreed. But my primary beef with them is the garish mural that now besmirches a fair-sized wall on my corner at 5th And Union. Bright blue background, and incompetently scrawled figures of cones and Uncle Louie himself. I've always liked the look of my neighborhood, and this flies in the face of it. I love Coney Island, and all its vulgar, yet entirely apropos to the location signage, but it just doesn't fly in Park Slope. I am annoyed every time it enters my field of vision.

If they were gonna bring Coney Island to my neighborhood, why couldn't it be Totonno's or the fried clams at Nathan's?

I am sure no one stopped a woman from that. Besides, was anyone their that is talking about it now? I like to hear the real story. until then LONG LIVE LOUIE G!

Here's the scoop in NY State. It is completely against the law for uncle louie g's to post that sign.

The following bill amends the civil rights law by adding a new section 79-e to read as follows:

§ 79-E. Right To Breast Feed.
Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a mother may breast feed her baby in any location, public or private, where the mother is otherwise authorized to be, irrespective of whether or not the nipple of the mother's breast is covered during or incidental to the breast feeding.

New York Senate Bill # 3999-A, 1994
1994 N.Y. ALS 98; 1994 N.Y. LAWS 98; 1994 N.Y. S.N. 3999
NY CLS Civ R § 79-e

An Act to amend the civil rights law, in relation to granting mothers an absolute right to breast feed.
The preamble to the bill provides as follows:

The People of the State of New York, represented in Senate and Assembly, do enact as follows:

Section 1. The legislature finds and declares that the Surgeon General of the United States recommends that babies from birth to one year of age be breast fed, unless medically contraindicated, in order to attain an optimal healthy start. Despite such recommendation, statistics reveal a declining percentage of mothers are choosing to breast feed their babies, and nearly half of all new mothers are now choosing formula over breast feeding before they even leave the hospital, only twenty percent are still breast feeding when their babies are six months old, and only six percent are still breast feeding when their babies are one year old.
The legislature further finds and declares that breast milk offers better nutrition, immunity, and digestion, and may raise a baby's IQ. In addition other benefits such as improved mother-baby bonding, and its encouragement has been established as a major goal of this decade by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. The social constraints of modern society militate against the choice of breast feeding and lead new mothers with demanding time schedules to opt for formula feeding for reasons such as embarrassment and the fear of social ostracism or criminal prosecution.
The promotion of family values and infant health demand putting an end to the vicious cycle of embarrassment and ignorance that constricts women and men alike in the subject of breast feeding and represents hostility to mothers and babies in our culture based on archaic and outdated moral taboos. Any genuine promotion of family values should encourage public acceptance of this most basic act of nurture between mother and baby, and no mother should be made to feel incriminated or socially ostracized for breast feeding her baby.
The legislature finally finds and declares that the breast feeding of a baby is an important and basic act of nature which must be encouraged in the interests of maternal and child health and family values.

Uncle Louie G didn't post any signs saying no breast feeing. It seems that there is some misunderstanding between a worker and a customer and it got out of hand. I've personally seen women breast feeding there and there wasn't any kind of problems. Those guys make the BEST ice cream and ices!

Thanks, Rogue. I had wondered about what the law was. But I just want to clarify that Louie G's didn't post a sign (that I know of). The sign I saw was posted by somebody else to protest Louie G's alleged anti-breastfeeding policy. Does anybody out there know what happened that led to the posting of the sign?
