the best bagels in Forest Hills are no longer here - they were in the location where "Manhattan Bagels" are now - they (Manhattan) are cookie cutter Einstein bagel rolls with lots of yuppie flavors but horrible chew.
Here are some of the choices I still like:
the bagelette store on 63rd Drive on the North side of QUeens Blvd (next to a supermarket) - technically Rego Park
the flat bagel store on QUeens Blvd - also on the north side - across the blvd from Kinkos - it's the border of FH and Kew Gardens.
The spreads from the Bagel Baron on 108th Street are top notch - but I personally don't like their bagels.
Try their whitefish salad or any of the cream cheeses. They do a tremendous business - but as I said we don't like their bagels...
Another place we've enjoyed is on Union Turnpike - large store on the right hand side as you drive towards St. John's - cann't remember the name or address. There is a large bagel store on Main Street in Flushing in the Jewish Neighborhood - they are usuallly busy too but I've never tried them - that is a mecca for "Jewish food" since there are lots of Shomar Shabat folks living there. There is a big Pita Hut restaurant that has a good salad bar for falafel, shwarma and grill sandwiches and platters - not 5 star but good value for money.
If you want a bagel at some odd hour of the night - the 24 hour bagel store on the south side of queens blvd in sunnyside is also very good - you can get there in about 7 minutes with a car and no traffic. I took the LIE to Greenpoint Avenue went up Greenpoint towards QUeens Blvd and made a left on 43rd St which brings you to the WHite Castle corner - the bagel store is in the middle of that block. Certainly accessible on the #7 train as well - think there's a stop on 41st???
I recently used them for a big breakfast gig I was doing and was very happy with the bagels (I ordered 12 dozen and they were hot as requested when I picked them up at 4 am.
But for a quick pick me up in the hood - my top choice is the one on 63rd Drive I think it's called Bagelette.

the "flat bagel" plce he is talking about is:
Hot Bialys Bagels
11663 Queens Blvd
Forest Hills, NY 11375-6533
Phone:(718)544-0900
I like their regular bagels since I'm not into flat ones. :)

I've been eating hot bialy bagels since high school and ended up very good friends with the wonderful thai couple that owns the place. they are the best bagels in the world, flat or not. and they're great w/ their regulars (myself included). the prices have gone up 5 or 10 cents over the years, but they kick ass up and down the boulevard, in and out of any borough, ever.

I second that vote for Bagelette on 63rd drive north of Queens Blvd. My boyfriend, a bagel connoiseur from way back, finds them to be a bit too sweet. But I like them that way. Anyway, they're thick, chewy, and with a nice crust. And the turnover's good there. so you can often get them hot. Just hop on the G/R/V to 63rd drive and get out on the north side- it's a half-block away.

There's a place on 108th st. called Bagel Baron. You didn't say where you were in FH, if you're near 108 st and apx. 64th ave, check them out. The bagels are regular sized, not oversized and tasteless. The whitefish spread is a delight. My faves include their house cream cheese on a raisin cinnamon, whitefish spread on a pumpernickel and their luscious butter on a salt bagel. Also....very good coffee.

Wow a 4 year old thread is reborn...could any of the original posters still be reading?
Over here in Kew Gardens I am quite happy with the fresh hot bagels being cranked out at Baker's Dozen Bagels, 81-09 Lefferts Blvd (on the bridge over the tracks, next to the theater).

Just for the updated record, Bagelette was sold, and it ain't what it was--going downhill quickly....the poached salmon salad was always super FRESH, no longer the case--it's sitting around...they are packaging larger amounts of cream cheeses into a case, and their muffins, which used to be good (at least the cinna coffee cake and choc choc chip---have disappeared ,and I just can't even describe how horrid their muffins are now, as well as their own pastries--shall I say--simply awful..a real shame, as I love their veggie tuna, and other stuff,,,,,but my last few experiences have not been good...also noticed the place is not nearly as clean as it was since old owner left------the place that used to be St. Petersburg bagels that moved near Sam Ash is so so--but okay in a pinch.

i'd like to report a nasty experience i had with FOREST HILLS BAGELS on queens blvd & jewel ave (in that little shopping area with taco bell, walgreens and fast break).
their bagels are nothing to write home about, but they are one of the few places that make breakfast sandwiches (bacon/egg/cheese). it's quite busy in the morning. my orders have always been screwed up whenever i order in the shop, but i don't know why i expected my order to be correct when i ordered for delivery.
the delivery took over an hour - the coffee and sandwiches were both cold and we had to microwave everything. in addition, the 2 breakfast sandwiches i ordered were completely incorrect. i was so annoyed i called the place back and asked why it took so long and why the order was completely wrong.
the young girl proceeded to argue with me saying that she had the order right, she would never mess up her customer's order. that's fine and dandy, but i know what i want in MY sandwich! she then said, "well, we have a recorder and i'm sure YOU are wrong and I am right!" so i called her bluff and said, "fine! let's listen to it!" then she said, "oh... it's broken."
i was so astounded at her nastiness - a simple apology would've been enough. i cannot give them anymore business with such unprofessional behavior!

Close by, on the south service road of the LIE (aka Horace Hardling Blvd heading east) is the immortal Bagel Oasis.

Knish Nosh (southside of QB near 67rdt) is now serving Jewish-style food. I picked up some motzah ball soup and a chicken croquette that was quite good.

their chopped liver is great, and also a great deal at $5 for one of those one-pound containers.
