I love Al Di La for Italian (5th Ave. & Carroll), Gingko Leaf for Japanese (Union between 6th & 7th), Minnow for seafood (9th St. & 7th Ave.).

I am also fond of Luce (6th Ave. & 11th St.) and Two Little Red Hens Bakery (13th St. & 8th Ave.).

Another hotbed of activity is at 1st Street & 5th Avenue where:

BLUE RIBBON (seafood) $$$$$pricey.

BONNIE'S GRILL - for the top-notch Burgers (have the french fries with sauce ON THE SIDE) and terrific Buffalo wings.

PS-Note that the "Little Red Hens" bakery mentioned in Kerry's post is closer to 11th Street.
