So, we decided to spend the afternoon at Red Hook Brooklyn and visit Steve's Key Lime Pie little bakery.
If you go there early enough you can choose from different sizes. Start with the 3" up to 12".

The pie is amazing. Fresh and cool. Great for summer.
You can seat on the water front overlooking Staten Il
and Liberty Bell.

address: 204-207 Vandyke. Enjoy

I just had one, and it was very good. When I make it myself, I make it even tarter, though!

I just wanted to bring a little attention to this archived thread. I, for one, could sure use something from Steve's to cool down and simultaneously satisfy my craving for something tart. I has got to go -- SOON !

'And what do you get when you take the absolute best key lime pie, put it on a stick, dip it in premium chocolate and freeze it? Of course you get a Swingle™, a frozen, chocolate-dipped key lime pie on a stick!' ... http://www.stevesauthentic.com/keylimepie.htm

I hate to be a nay-sayer. I really like the pies, and LOVE the setting and the whole aesthetic, but I have to say: I don't really think the pies are that exceptional. I wish I could get behind them and totally gush about what a transformative experience they are, and how I never had a TRUE key lime pie until I tried Steve's, but . . . in a blind test taste, I'm guessing they wouldn't actually blow away the competition from any half-decent restaurant or bakery. That being said, I haven't tried the Swingle yet, so I'll reserve judgment that maybe that's something truly unique and wonderful. I *can* vouch for the limeade, which, for what it is, is mighty tasty and refreshing on a hot summer day. Not worth trekking across Brooklyn for, but if you're in Red Hook already, worth a stop.

And, yes, there is a nice place to sit and drink your limeade and eat your pie (or Swingle!), but better still is to take it and go around the corner, into the heart of the relatively new plant Liberty Sunset Garden Center on Pier 41, and sit at a lovely table just about on top of the Harbor, surrounded by exotic perennials and annuals and Lady Liberty practically close enough to reach out and touch.

I agree. I've wanted to love that pie, but it just isn't special. The surroundings, however, are. So go eat some decent pie and enjoy the view. For revelatory key lime pie, try Pies and Thighs, which is a dump surrounded by urban wasteland, so get some amazing pie and take it home.

Key lime and Mexican lime are used interchangeably. FWIW cooks did a key lime write up were they claim regular Persian limes were the best in their test. Steve's is really above average in that the crust has actual butter in it, the pies are fresh.

I've had great Key Lime Pie in Key West...seems every restaurant down there has a little different spin on them. I wouldn't spend the extra $$ on key limes though-the bottled juice works just fine. I'm wondering if I should drizzle some good dark chocolate on my next one...
