Just got back from Cocina Cuzco, on 7th Ave, and I was very impressed with it. I haven't had much in the way of Peruvian food in the past, so I can't vouch for its authenticity and such, but it was very good. We were in the mood for something light, so just had soups and salads, but the rest of the menu looked very good as well.
I had a seafood soup, don't remember the name, but it had shrimp, scallops, mussells, clams and lots of squid in it, as well as some corn, peas, green beans, rice, lime, and green chili - excellent. The black bean soup was good as well, as were the salads, and the mojito really hit the spot.
I was also very impressed with the service - genuinely friendly waiters, whose upsell attempts didn't come off as obnoxious, and who noticed that one of the salads wasn't finished and asked to make sure everything was OK.

Must strongly disagree. Have been there several times, and have been completely underwhelmed by the food and the service. I have found it inauthentic, tasteless, and mediocre at best. The meats are tough, the soups are greasy, the bread is not fresh, and the staff is woefully unknowledgeable about what they're serving.

Nina, I think that restaurant location is cursed. I can't think of how many restaurants have been there and closed. Nam was pretty bad, then there was a Malaysian restaurant that was worse...It's too bad because I like the outdoor dining area.

The restaurant location where Yamato is...is also cursed. Sweet Mama's, a short-lived diner, etc...

For the sake of historical semi-completeness, the Malaysian place was called Coco Reef and it was repellent.

Nam middled, but it wasn't as bad as that was. Oy.

was the original uncursed restaurant on that site. It was there for years, and had simple food but done well with outstanding onion rings.
Something must have happened after Minsky's closed to begin the curse--anyone know??

Part of me has been wanting to try this place since it opened, but every time I walk by and look at the menu, I don't even see anything that I would want to order. So I've stayed away. I'd much rather have Mexican food at La Taqueria (the sit-down side)

I'm with you. I love this place. A very tasty half roasted chicken with rice and beans for $6. It's reminiscent of my Flor De Mayo days. Plus I've been there with various sets of friends all of whom found a ceviche to love. It may not be authentic but we like it and will certainly go again. I think the nay-sayers are right about the service, though. Always just barely fine.
