Pooor Freddies Rib Shack...Amazing!!!

I'm a Canadian girl, who moved to the south then moved up the NYC...

While in the south i fell in love with Southern food, been trying and trying to find some up here but have always been disappointed until i remembered someone posting about the Rib Shack in Jamaica..

Boy am i glad i remembered that!! It was amazingly good.

We had the fried chicken and the rib dinner, had some collard greens which were the best ive had in a loooong time, mashed potatoes and gravy, the gravy was to die for and the mashed light and tasty. The corn was good, just needed a bit more salt, and some mac'n cheese...that was ok, nothing fancy, but nothing great either.

The chicken was breaded with bits of heaven, no oily mess there, just straight out good taste.

The ribs were falling off the bone good, the sauce which is ketchup based was tangy and like nothing else i had tasted before.

Had some desserts too!! The banana/nilla waffers pudding was soooo good, reminded me of when my mom made cakes and we could lick the bowl..It was dense and high in flavor..

The sweet potato pie was good too, dense and thick with sweetness.

The only thing that wasnt good was the corn bread, it was dry and tasteless...bit of a let down cause i like my corn bread!!

This place took me by surprise, out in the middle of a residential area, you dont know if you should go in or not...They dont wait on you there if you dont know what you want, so unless youre ready, dont step up to the counter, they just might kick you out!!

So cheap too, our meal cost us 20$.... you are paying for the good food, not the decor there, its just a takeout joint on Linden BLVD close to 58th.

Well worth it!! I think im going again next week!!, more to try....

It took me a while to figure out, but Poor Freddies is in Jamaica Queens, on Linden near 158th Street. It's high on my list of places to go.

      Hey Genevieve

Pooor Freddies is by far the best soul food around.. I've been going there for years and have yet to be disappointed. Your right about the mac and cheese but everything else is usually terrific.. Next time you go try the Smothered Pork Chops....THE BEST.. Oxtails are good as well and the Ham Hocks are OUT OF THIS WORLD. They also have somehting called Fried chicken back. 5 for $2 I think..Mostly breading on chicken bone but it's tasty.. I ordered food from Freddies for my wifes birthday party last year and everyone was raving about the eats..Glad you enjoyed it..

PS..Pooor Freddie also owns a car repair shop (no joke) so if you break down in the neighborhood you can dine on some chitlins while waiting for repairs..

I'm totally confused. Is this place at 58th or at 158th?
I really need to know. Fried chicken, collard, sweet potato pie...
