I would love to hear any suggestions for places that are kid friendly but are not painful to the adults (no hard rock cafe, no Mcdonalds). I mean the food (although it seems to be that the great ethnic unifier is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches) as well as the attitude/atmosphere. Those with kids know what I mean. A partial checklist
High chairs
Enough background noise to drown out the squeals and fights
Permissive attitude (actual exchange at Indian restaurant: ME: "do you have high chairs" WAITER: "we do not serve children" ME: "thats ok, im a vegetarian, havent eaten them for years" WAITER (Blank stare): "Please go elsewhere")
Bathrooms
Friendly staff

Some of the places I suggest:
Thailand restaurant (ChinaTown)
Odeon (Tribeca)
Diner (Williamsburg)
Yemen Cafe (Atlantic Ave)
Waterfall (Atlantic Ave)
Iron Chef (Brooklyn Heights)
Grimaldis (Brooklyn Heights)

No kidding about Joya. Every time I go, there are babies, children and breastfeeding mothers galore. Sometimes it's like a big maternity festival or something.

Sahara, the enormous Turkish restaurant on Coney Island Avenue and (I think) Avenue U is quite friendly. It's also entertaining for kids -- lots of big fish tanks (featuring beautiful fish, not fish intended for the frying pan). It's especially great the summer, when you can sit in the backyard -- cute cats wander around, there's a fountain, etc. etc.
