Sripraphai: what was that?

I had the pork over rice dish at Sripraphai which was very good. Served alongside it on the edge of the plate was a rather large white and green stalk of vegetable, which I wasn't sure what to do with, although I guess I was supposed to munch on it along with my meal. It looked like a fat stalk of scallion, and because of that I didn't want to bite into it, fearing it would be too strong, but it turned out to be quite mild. Can someone tell me what that was? Was it a stalk of scallion or something else?
