Queens Italian needed

  • l

Need an Italian restaurant in western Queens for a dinner meeting..."neighborhood" type, where you can talk quietly. Any suggestions? Thanks.

  1. Aside from Piccola Venezia, one of the best, little know Italian restaurants in western Queens is Dazie's on Queens Blvd @ 39th Place.
    Good spot for quiet conversation.

there are a number of nice family-style italian places in astoria and woodside. i'd give highest marks to Nino's, which is on Steinway Street, just off 28th avenue. they do the standards very well, but also offer a number of surprises, the best of which turn up on the specials (notably the pastas, which are homemade, rustic and delicious). their fish preps are also top-of-the-line (whole specimens deftly fileted at the table).

Gables, which is at Broadway and 31st, is not italian per se--although it is run by an italian family. It's one of my favorite comfort restaurants, cozy, not super adventurous, but quite reliable for seafoods and salads. the pastas are usually good, esp. the fra diavolo and puttanesca, both of which do have bite.
