The Red Rail (Henry and Sackett) makes a fine burger and outstanding fries. I'd ask for it a little less well done than usual since they tend to overcook them. But I, too, am curious to learn of others' favorite burger joints in this area...

I agree that the Red Rail has pretty good burgers -- in fact, I think that's about the only thing there that is good and a pretty reasonable price.
I wonder if the food/burgers at the Irish-looking Bar one block North of Sparky's Ale House (Luquer and Court?) is good. Has anyone been there? I can't remember the name and if I'm down there always go to Sparky's.

As for Heights burgers, I've heard that the Grand Canyon on Montague serves a good one -- you won't get much atmosphere to go with it, though.

I "special ordered" a cheeseburger from Smith Street Kitchen last night (I know, I know, I hear that the fish is great, but I was in the mood) for $10.00 it came with a nice plate of fries, mesclun, pickle, etc. It was good, above average, but the inside of the bun was burned. I wouldn't say that the Brooklyn Heights area is the best for a burger but I would love to be proven wrong!

Long Island Restaurant is on the corner of Henry and Atlantic. After the reviews on this board I checked out their burger and found it quite good indeed. I seem to recall that the original post specified a "big" burger, which isn't how I'd describe this one. For me, the size was just fine. Fries, while not the best I've ever had, weren't bad either.

I've had many talks with Ralph, the wonderful head chef at the Manhattan branch, about the french fries. I'm not claiming that WAH has the best food in the world, but so much thought and individuality go into so many of the dishes, and the onion rings (often served as an accompaniment to steaks there) are so good, I can never figure out why those indifferent waffle fries come out of the kitchen.

Just to clarify...since you've posted on the Outer Boroughs board, I'll assume you're talking about the Brooklyn Branch (there's one in Manhattan as well).

Sunday night of Memorial Day weekend is a party night, and this is, first/foremeost, a bar. And it's unfair to expect a bar to keep menus uniformly wiped-down and floors impeccably swept on that sort of night. I don't think this is an apt way of judging cleanliness.

As for lighting, unless they've changed something, I've always considered the place downright dim. But one hound's dimness may well be another hound's glare...

Another opinion: I've always found the Waterfront food more than decent, especially in light of the wonderful selection of tap beers--including some that you can't get anywhere else. It's one of the few dim bars I'd take my three year old to--and sometimes do, when she asks for salmon for lunch on a Friday afternoon and I'd like a pint or two. The branch in Manhattan has downright GOOD food (including a standard game burger, usually ostrich or venison, with their own ketchup) along with the same great taps. Both branches are my favorite places to eat AND drink.

I ate there once with my family, and found the menu and the food quite good. The only problem at that time was the smokiness--there was no non-smoking area. When we added in the dry cleaning bill for everything everyone was wearing, it made for quite an expensive burger.

Is there still no way to get away from the smoke?

I like their burgers a lot. I think they're the best in the neighborhood. Their soups are often interesting and yummy - had a squash- or pumpkin-based one in fall or winter that was really great and I'm not a big soup person. Their beer list is impressive and they always have a nice selection of hard ciders - draft and bottled (had the pear cider last time - nice). They have a million condiments (some are quite intriguing) at each table and fresh-popped corn for free at the front. I find it comfy - good bar food, you can talk and hear each other, it isn't a sports bar, it isn't trendy, - lots to recommend it...
