Great arepas in Richmond Hill!

  • j

I have been stopping by the arepa store in Richmond Hill the last few Sundays, and have to recommend the place. It as a tiny Columbian bakery at 115-11 Jamaica Avenue (under the J-train), and is actually called Girasol Enterprises/Fabrica de Arepas. Phone(718) 805-5604. They do have a few stools but they have been occupied whenever I went.

My recommendations include their wonderful arepa de choclo (corn meal arepa filled with cheese), their flan (which is very good and a steal at $1.50 a portion), and pamleras ($1) (a flaky pastry also known as elephant ears or palmiers.) They also have patries with guava, and ones with dulce de leche (caramel.) Thier bread pudding, and figs with dulce de leche looks good, but I haven't tried them yet. I have been getting tamarind soda, but that may just be my taste.

They also have empanadas, but I have never been a fan of Colombian empanadas (because they are starchy) although my friend liked them. I did have one of their Columbian sausages which was intersesting. I noticed that they have morcilla (blood sausage) but didn't try it.

This bakery is near the Guatamalan restaurant that Ivan Stoler posted about recently, although I haven't tried it yet.

Thaks for the Seba Seba tip Jim. I'll check it out.

    2. Do all arepas have cheese or dairy in em? I've always wanted to try them but the evil lactose intolerance scares me

Yes, arepas have milk or cheese.

I have a bad case of lactose intolerance myself, but take Lactaid Ultra. Maybe you can do the same.

If it helps, the palmeras don't have dairy.
