Two Toms

My wife and I have been thinking about trying Two Toms on Third Avenue near Union, based on a friend's recommendation. However, the place looks like a hangout for the Sopranos crew, so we haven't given it a shot as yet.

I'd be curious to hear what others think of Two Toms. I'd also like to know if they serve vintage wine, i.e., something a little more upscale than jug wine.

  1. On certain nights, Two Tom's is host of a rough looking crowd. Actually, its often parties of off-duty police officers. It is near impossible to get a table Thursday-Saturday nights. I'd try mid-week. No menus, so don't ask for one...but very thick, nice filets and pork chops (we often take plenty home for next day sandwiches). Vegetables are overcooked. Wine is strictly jug-variey. Meat is the star. Atmosphere is unusual - I love it.

      "Third Avenue near Union" could one of you provide an exact address and borough/town? Sounds good.

        Sorry, I guess I thought EVERYONE knew of Two Toms ;).

        I am referring to 3rd Avenue and Union Street, which I think is loosely on the western fringe of Park Slope.

        Put another way, if you were to drive up Flatbush from the Manhattan Bridge, for example, you could take a right on 3rd Avenue (at the BAM corner) and proceed to Union. Then look to your left as you continue driving, and about a half block past Union sits Two Toms.

        Hope that clarifies it.

          Going to Two Toms is an experience! As has been said, they have no menus, no tax- everything ends in .00 I once witnessed a police officer party where all the bald officers had to wear lemon and salami slices while they ate. As for the food, I have found it very uneven- you can have whatever you want, however you want it- as long as the cook/owner wants to make it for you. If you are all on the same page, it can be a fun dining experience- and BTW- don't talk about baseball- I have a friend who literally was thrown out for having the "wrong" opinion about a team!

            I used to love Two Toms when I lived in Park Slope 8 years ago.You can get all this stuff family style . . . we'd always split appies like Clams Casino for the whole table. Then I'd get stuff like manicotti or eggplant parm or chicken cacciatore. You just name the italian stuff you like and they tell you whether or not they can make it. Or just say, how would you recommend veal to be prepared, and they'll rattle off a bunch of varieties. If more than one person orders something they might serve it family style. It's a trip! Cheap, too. Also the wine wasn't quite as bad as jug, just cheap table wine.

              As already stated, Two Toms is an experience. For sure, you will not leave hungry and you will not leave poor (usually comes out to $35/person or so). Keep in mind, there are no desserts (though they welcome you bringing something and will keep it in the fridge for you). Also, while the pork chops and steak are their specialties, they also make a great chicken dish topped with prosciutto and ricotta cheese that I would strongly recommend.

                Allow me to offer a wildly divergent view of this place. First of all, its raffish quality is an affectation intended to lure suckers who want to pretend they're part of the Sopranos. The steak (sliced as at Peter Luger) and the triple thick pork chop are indeed wonderful. If only you could grab 'em and beat a hasty retreat. The rest of the food is of atrociously bad quality--antipasti that tastes like old laundry, the pickled red peppers effervescing on the tongue, almost liquid with putridity; pastas so overcooked and thinly sauced that they might as well be sitting in bathwater (look in the kitchen--there's usually only one guy actually cooking in there while the room is jammed, and yes there are plenty of fraternal organizations of police officers, elks, etc. in there). You serve yourself beer, wine, and soda from a glass case, the meal proceeds at a snail's pace, by the time the good stuff comes, you're surfeited on the bad. After your meal, you don't know how many plates of food (which come unbidden)

                  ...that's why I only eat the meat. I generally don't even order the other stuff. I have some garlic bread and then some steak. Not the healthiest, most well-rounded meal one can have, but once in a while...As for the "raffish" quality, how can you tell its an affectation and not the real thing? I see it like this: If you go for the steak, and the steak is great, what else do you need?

                    Yeah, it wasn't the best food, come to think of it, I was more into it when I was young and had very little $$$. But those Clams Casino tasted so good when you're a little drunk and totally starved.
                    I remember having to make a phone call and they let me use this old phone in the kitchen. There was this one little old tank of a lady cooking everything which I thought was kinda interesting . . .

First of all, you go to Two Toms with a bunch of guys that want to spend three hours at a table drinking beers and wine, eating large amounts of food, telling all kinds of stories, and getting into that old time fraternity spirit. Make it fun, go with 8 to 12 people, eat, drink and enjoy. Not the place to take your honey for a romantic dinner. I had to keep from falling off my chair when the vintage wine question was asked. Not to insult the poster, but once you have been there you will know why I laughed so hard
