The Garden Cafe in Prospect Hts.

Im ashamed to say we just visited our neighborhood's
only upscale restaurant for the first time, tho its
been operated by a local couple (its owners and
seemingly sole employees) for many years. Slap my
hand. While the Garden Cafe is tiny (only 8 tables)
the space is elegant and well laid out without
crowding. Mellow jazz (not too loud)and creative
decorating and serving touches enhance elegant well-
prepared French-toned cuisine, as does their good,
limited wine list, mostly at around $25 per bottle.
Serving sizes are ample, especially considering that
buttery reduction sauces abound, asian tinged with a
light wild mushroom saute, more classically french
with my scallops in brown butter and my husband's
striper in a sauce tinged with vinegar, and least
successfully in my daughters lamb mignon with curry
(powder) and lemon sauce, though she enjoyed the
lamb. Dessert was a highlight; my caramel gelato with
a rum and pecan sauce was absolutely luscious, and
other equally attractive desserts (including mango and
pineapple soup with banana gelato, a vanilla mousse
with blueberry and lemon sauce and the deep chocolate
cake ordered by the others) beckoned.
Serves dinner only Tues-Sat. Through the rest of the
summer serving a $25 prix fixe 3-course dinner (from
their regular menu)Tues-Thurs, an excellent value.
Most apps around $6-7, main courses around $18. Highly
recommended for a special night out for those in the
