With the warm weather almost on us, my thoughts were
turning to LIKC when another chowhound friend told me
the place is going downhill!

Argh! I want answers!

I always feel like a tourist when I go to the Lemon
Ice King, even though I live within walking distance.
This past winter when Jeremy and I got simultaneous
sweet tooth cravings, peanut butter (more peanut-
buttery than you might imagine) and raspberry ices
were not only intensely satisfying but took me on some
boardwalk/beach deja vu - not bad for $1.

The LIKC is as good as ever - here is my personal take on the products:

- Fruit ices are better than the others.
- Most of the sweeter flavors are too sweet.
- You can pack it and take it home, but you will never be able to keep it at the same slushy consistency as in the store. They know the secret temperature.
- Get small portions - since they don't mix, you can try more by eating 3 smalls instead of one large at negligible cost.

If you are there in the afternoon, Go to the Corona Heights Pork Store beforehand and get a Chicken Cutlet Parmesean Hero. Butcher shop chicken, homemade cheese, fresh bread - followed by an ice, you will be in paradise.

Wayne, I agree with lots of your opinions (save your money at Chalet Alpina, by the way...not awful, but nothing to get excited about).

But I'm surprised to see you falling for the mystique of Lemon Ice King. About every year I myself get suckered in...and go try an ice and get angry all over again over how such mediocre stuff can attract such serious attention. A year later the amnesia returns. Zeitgeist is powerful.

Get ye to Ralph's in Staten Island. Or, better yet(but summers only), J&W's ices in back of J&W's bagels on amboy road at hugeneot ave. Or best of all, Rex's Ice (run by an extremely eccentric high school principle, random days summertime only), opposite Patsy's Pizza at 1st and 117 (skip strawberry!)

Howdy Jim,

I will have to try your other ice suggestions. I stand by my comments on the fruit ices, especially pineapple, coconut, lemon and rasberry. (Basically, anything you can make with chunks of fruit.) On the other flavors, I agree that they, for the most part, are lackluster - either two sweet or .....shall we say, unusual? (i.e. fruit cocktail and peanut butter.)

I like the setting, the park across the street, the price, the just plain jovial atmosphere (and the fact I currently live about a mile away.) I don't like the fact that they won't mix and cop an attitude occasionally.

and god-forbid they give you a napkin....

but the stuff is great. And, even though I hate peanut butter flavored stuff (like cookies and pies) I love the peanut butter ices...if you haven't tried it, go for it! I was shocked at how yummy they are!!

It's a bit of a walk from the train; take the 7 to 110th or 108th street, I can't remember which the stop is called but you get the idea, then walk south on 108th street for about 1/2 mile. The LIK is at the corner of 108th and Corona Ave.

There are many, many posts on LIK and related topics, further down this board.

Grew up in Forest Hills though I now live in Wisconsin. Love the Lemon Ice King and go back whenever I can. Pistachio and Coconut are my personal favorites. I'm kinda sorry to report that they actually started to offer napkins this year. I reveled in the "take it or leave it" ambiance that is so NYC. Scott Simon did a piece on the place for NPR that made me weep. Of course, by car it's easy to get there. Take LIE to 108th Street Exit and go north about eight blocks. Check out the bocci players in the park across the street.

I guess I'm a bit behind on these posts, so I'll hope someone sees it as late as I did...The "King" is the best, I've lived in Corona since 1983 and only recently move to Long Island. I got my fiancee from Bklyn into the King when I used to live there, and now she pouts for it all the time! I have to actually drive over 30 minutes just so that she can have her Lemon Ice King!! amazing.

Hey, I just got back from NY (live in CA) and only after my return did I hear about the King. I couldn't find Ices anywhere. My question is, do they have a web site or do they ship outside NY? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

No way!
The old man is still in the back every day, pumping out
the best Italian ices known to citykind. I went two or
three times this winter. Even with a crisp winter
breeze, Ice King still hits the spot! And you can bet
that once those 90-plus days hit, folks will be lined
up all the way down 108th Street just to get a tasting.
Go ahead. Try and name someone who does it better. The
guy practically invented Italian ices.
