Waiting for a table to open up at Kabab Cafe last
night, we had a couple of nice bar experiences on that
block of Steinway. On the corner of 25th Ave. is a
Greek bar called Monte Cristo, where the bartentender,
though initially rather gruff, turned out to be quite
friendly and talked with us for about half an hour
about his home in Greece. And across the street is an
Irish pub (I think it's called Farell's), where we
drank Guinness and shot a game of pool on their
undersized table -- I was actually able to sink a
couple of balls! (When we left Farell's a table was
free at KC; dinner, shellfish stew, was outstanding.)

When waiting for Kabab Cafe I sometimes go to the
Egyptian cafe across the street to smoke shisha and
drink fenugreek tea. Or stand around in the front of
Kabab Cafe and banter with Ali while he cooks.
