Hi all.

I'm going to visit SF in August and have heard a lot of good things about the Brother's Korean restaurant.
I'd really like to try it out. However, I have to use public transit (BART, bus etc). Any tips on how to get there by public transit?

What dishes must I try? Also, do they accept lone diners?

Thanks a lot!

Being a visitor to our fine city is a wonderful thing, and the city has pretty good public transit - not necessarily the best way to get to a place if you're pressed for time, but if you have a leisurely pace, you'll find it well worth your while.

For all of your transit needs, you'll want to check out the link below. You can input your start and end points, as well as how far you're willing to walk, and you'll get the available options for your trip.

It includes all the major transit organizations (BART, Muni, CalTrain, AC Transit among them), so whether you are in the East Bay, City or South Bay, you'll be able to find "how to get there."

good luck, and please report back on your trip - we always love hearing visitor reports.

where will you be staying?
te muni system is pretty extensive and can get you from anywhere to anywhere....Both brothers restaurants are within 2 blocks of each other on Geary between 3rd and 5th i believe, so take a llok at the map and you should be able to figure out a way out there.
The muni site also will help you with directions if you plug in your beginning and ending address....
have fun.

I always get the kalbi at Brother's. As a lone diner, you will receive fewer dishes of panchan--but if you ask for anything in particular (I like the anchovies) they're usually happy to oblige. You also don't have the option to cook yourself unless there are two people both ordering barbecue; they do it in the kitchen.

Lunch is a particularly good deal if you're by yourself; under $7 including a big plate of rib meat, soup, rice, and at least 6 kinds of pickles.

Speaking of non-default panchan, they generally do not (or did not use to) automatically bring the following to non-Korean diners (but are happy to do so if you ask):

panchan:
marinated crab

sides for kalbi & other BBQ:
scallion salad
raw garlic
raw chili peppers

The kalbi is hard to resist. But when we went with more people we would often get the gopchang gui (BBQ tripes) too. The grilled fish dishes are good too - I particularly liked the mackerel and the "king"fish.

By the way, many folks don't know about San Francisco Muni Passports. These make public transit within SF very economical for travelers and thus make getting to the real chowhound restaurants a lot cheaper. A Passport allows you unlimited travel on San Francisco's streetcars, buses, and cable cars for either 1, 3 or 7 days. The 1-day passport is $6.00, the 3-day is $10.00, and the 7-day is $15.00. Here's a link to more info:

Take BART and get off at the Montgomery station and get yourself to the corner of New Montgomery and Market St, and take the #38 Geary bus on Market Street(take #38L between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.-this will be faster). The bus stop is outside of McKesson Corp or near that Specialty's Bakery (great bread, muffins, and sandwiches). The fare is $1.00 for adults and 35 cents for seniors, disabled, or children. Take a transfer which sometimes can be as long as 3 hours so that you can ride back to the BART station. Brother's#1 or Brother's #2 is on Geary Street in the Richmond district between 5th and 6th Avenue. The MUNI bus ride is about 35 to 40 minutes.

I've always see a line there, which is an indication that people like that place!
