I just moved back to NYC from Los Angeles and I'm going through Mashti Malone's withdrawal -- does anyone know if Persian ice cream is available anywhere in the five boroughs?

I've never seen any besides a dessert item at a Persian restaurant, and they weren't as good as Mashti's. I think you (and I) are SOL. I would just concentrate on the gelato around town. I haven't had any really good gelato in LA, though I haven't sought it out so much there.

yes, the iranian restaurants in new york serve the basic rose water/saffron ice cream with dessert (like at nader, which no longer exists). and faloodeh (a rose water/lemon sweet and sour slushy with frozen vermicelli).

of the manhattan iranian places, i'd say persepolis on the UES has the best kabobs, and pars (in chelsea) the best appetizers. both have the standard iranian ice cream and so-so faloodeh (too sweet at pars, and the noodles are too chopped up at persepolis, but it's served with a little thing of sour cherry syrup, which is nice).

one other thought--there's a nader grocery store in midtown, and was (at least a few years ago) another iranian grocery store (called pars maybe?) also in midtown--has anyone been to these places recently? maybe they could be lobbied to sell mashti malone stuff?

i so regret being too stuffed when i had the chance to try mashti malone's when i was in LA recently, and we have no comparable iranian options here. my best alternate proposal would be to get the golden reserve honey at the blue ribbon cafe market in the west village--it's amazing stuff, and intensely floral (and reminds me of an iranian orange blossom jam made in the north of iran). and as Eric Eto recommended, enjoy the gelato here--il laboratorio de gelato in the east village has extraordinary gelato.

if you find good iranian ice cream please do post back. good luck!

And I! When I was last back in LA I checked out Mashti's on your rec, Eric. Dios mio, it was good! I won't get into it since this isn't the place, but that orange blossom... it was like tasting spring.

Getting back on topic- their website has an online store. Do you know if they'll ship to NY?

It looks like they do, although shipping for three quarts via overnight on dry ice was an additional $39. Cheaper than a flight to CA, though....

Is that place called?
