I got a fabulous cake from Crumb (Amsterdam and 75th, I think) for my mother's 60th birthday. I had searched all over the city for a bakery that would make a pineapple upside down cake to no avail. I wandered into Crumb and asked them. They went out of their way to make it special order and it was DELICOUS. Their cupcakes are out of this world.
p.s. I am not a fan of the place up in Harlem. Tastes very sheet-cakey. -

I always say that Amy's Bread has the best birthday cakes for the money-- the quality is excellent and they last a good long time. There's an Amy's on 9th Avenue at 47th Street.

Yep, the double chocolate is great. One caveat though-- Amy's Bread's Monkey Cake isn't as good as Billy's Bakery's Banana Cake. But that's just about the only cake that isn't excellent.

Huge fan of Amy's. We get all of our office birthday cakes there. A cake runs about $40 and they'll deliver it. We've had milk chocolate, dark chocolate, yellow cake with pink frosting and I think a carrot cake. They've all been great - with both the texture and the taste of the cake as well as the not too sweet frosting.
