Despite all the rave reviews, I'm not a huge fan of The Doughnut Plant. First, I prefer cake doughnuts and second, the glaze didn't stand out.

Then I saw their new cake doughnuts at Zabar's today. Could it be, a gourmet cake donought? Is it worth a try? Or do you think the Donut Pub and Cupcake Cafe are better?

I've always found the Doughnut Plant donuts to be high quality, but not my cup of tea. They're big and messy to eat. When I was growing-up, they described donuts like this as Polish-style. We used to get them on 2nd Avenue, sometimes with gold leaf on them. I find them to be oily and a texture like biting into wet wax paper. I'd try the cake ones, though. I used to love the ones from that market in the Hamptons (Dresden's Market? sp?). For awhile they sold them on the platforms at Penn Station, I believe.

Dreesen's...Though they still sell the donuts at the location it's not the same as getting them fresh from the fat w/ a little cinnamon sugar. Oh, those were the days...There doesn't seem to be anything like that in NYC....

I think the cake doughnuts are marginally better than the yeast ones, but still clunky. I'm not wild about Donut Pub or Cupcake Cafes, either. I save myself for Coffee 'An in Westport, CT.

I love the cake doughnuts at Doughnut Plant -- moreso than the yeast. Most people, however, seem to have turned against doughnut plant. I haven't seen a "rave review" in some time.

After comparing to Top Pot,the king of Seattle doughnuts, I can confirm that Donut Plant reigns supreme. I prefer the original Vahlrona Chocolate donuts but the blackout cake donuts are also awesome!
