Visiting from Boston on a daytrip to the city. We will be begin a day of walking and wandering at the Guggenheim and end at Canal St around 6pm. If you were to make such a trip(in jeans and sneakers) where would you stop for sustinance along the way? Some possibilities are Bubby's, Donut Planet, Tea and Sympathy, Burger Joint, Serendipity, Good Enough to Eat, Bar Pitti, Old Town Bar and Grill, Katz's, Nick's Family Style, Moustache and Gabriella's. I know we're all over the map geographically and gastronomically so your guidance will help us to focus. Thanks!

I give up. Who's out there telling everyone that Donut Plant's name is Donut Planet?

Anywho, your trip covers so much ground that your request isn't all that different from "I'm going to be in Manhattan, where should I eat?"

However, out of the places you mentioned, I'd stop off at Burger Joint. After 30 or so blocks, what could be better than a burger that kicks the butt of both Shake Shack's and Corner Bistro's?

And at the end of the walk...

Well, the last big walk I made was back during the transit strike. I started at Penn Station and, when I got down to Houston, I had sushi at Ushiwakamaru. It was a really nice meal to have after lugging my bags 40 blocks.

Doughnut Plant isn't better than the mom & pop shops in Boston, and 3-4 times the price. They do have some crazy flavors tho if you want to try something different.

If you enjoy snacking while walking- i'd walk over to Andre's Cafe (1631 2nd ave/84th-85th) and choose an assortmnt of sweet and savory strudel. Nora Ephron wrote about this place in the NYT (her quest for finding cabbage strudel)...

Then while enjoying your strudel- walk down to Payard (1032 Lexington-73rd/74th)and choose a selection of pastries, chocolates, gelato & sorbet. ( they might be closed sunday) ...

While tasting the Payard goodies, I'd walk down Lexington to Burke in the Box (150E 59th btwn Lex & 3rd) which is David Burke's take out place in Bloomingdales. I'd share an order of "Cheeseburker sliders" & fries and buy a few of his cheesecake lollipops. He really adds a fun twist to fast food and classic American dishes.

Also run across the street from there to check out Dylan's Candy Bar (this Willy Wonka'd store is jam packed with excited kids- so it is probably a quick look and see)

maybe from here - go to Grand Central and take a look around the beautiful terminal ( and a good food court - with Juniors Cheesecake from Brooklyn- Little Pie Company- and during weekdays- good chowder (NE & Manhattan) at the Oyster Bar with quick service at the counter)

maybe by now you are ready to hop on the downtown subway....

Thanks so much for your help! I appreciate your suggestions and input, despite my inferior spelling. I love the idea of the sweet shops because I'd take a good chocolate over a burger anyday.

I second the suggestion to visit the Grand Central market; it's expensive, but a feast for every one of your senses. However, I cannot agree with the suggestion to visit the food court on the lower level. I work in one of the buildings that adjoins Grand Central and can say from experience that the cleanliness of that entire food court leaves much to be desired. Given all that's available in NYC, I know you can do much better.

I would rule out Serendipity. The wait will be too long for you to make the walk during daylight.

Economy Candy (on Rivington near Essex) is fun. Lots of imported candy, regular candy and retro/kitschy candy (Wonka bars, those candy dots on paper strips, etc.). They also have plenty of snacky bulk goods (wasabi peas, dried fruit, nuts).

Moshie's Bake Shop on Second Avenue right below 8th st. POPPYSEED anything! Lots of cookies and cakes. The cakes are purchased by the pound and so you can sample lots of them. That's what I do. Go to the bakeries in Chinatown. Tai Pan Bakery is on Canal east of Mott street and their cream buns are one of my favorite things in the city. Joe's Dairy on Sullivan below houston is awesome. So is Sullivan st bakery just a few streets down. I would live on Sullivan street for these two places if I could. Oh and Once Upon a tart is inbetween and they have fabulous pecan blueberry muffins.
