Most any restaurant should be able to accomodate your needs as long as you call ahead and inform them. Otherwise you'll be pretty much out of luck as just about everything has at least a touch of garlic in some part of the preparation. Good luck.

iirc, the menu at the Silver Swan (20th btwn Park & Bwy) has very few items containing either onions or garlic.

still, as an earlier poster stated any kitchen should accomodate your cousin'd dietary request.

When it comes to dealing with allergies in restaurants, it's best to go someplace where at least some menu items are prepared in a plain, straightforward manner, i.e., grilled. That way, you have more of a chance of avoiding sauces that contain onions and garlic.

Barbounia, on the corner of Park Av. S. & 20th St., serves delicious Greek/Mediterranean cuisine. Nice selection of grilled fish and meats. Friendly, efficient service. Large space with very attractive decor.

Being someone that was raised with food allergies, preposterous food allergies intrigue me. I have a friend that claims to be allergic to pork. What is it you r cousin is claiming to be allergic to? Is it really possible that she goes into anaphylactic shock if garlic/onions get involved? Or are we talking the “I get heartburn when I eat onions prepared a certain way” sill use of the word allergy? That being said maybe there is a nice pancake place over there.

On the contrary, onion and garlic allergies are quite real. Here's a quote from the BBC.com "Health" website: "In adults, nuts..., fruits..., and vegetables (such as celery, tomato, onion, garlic and parsley) are common allergens..." Some people experience extreme sensitivity to raw onions and garlic but are relatively okay with the cooked variety. This may be due to breakdown of the allergenic components during the heating process.

If you do a web search of "onion garlic allergy" you will find many hits from a wide variety of sources, including scientific and medical.

Since I developed a wheat allergy almost 25 years ago, I've become aware of the wide range of food allergies out there. It may sound ridiculous, preposterous, stupid and bogus when somebody says they're allergic to onions and garlic, but it's better not to scoff until you've walked a mile in their shoes, or at least done the research.
