I had the same problem finding them last fall. Finally found them up-state in Kingston at Adam's Market on route 9w. I bought more than I could use and would be willing to part with a few bags if you can't get them.

I smoke my own meats and live in Manhattan so I have had the same problem finding mesquite and hickory wood chips. They are very difficult to find off-season.

Whole foods carries them most of the summer but different stores have them in stock at different times, so call first.

Home depots in Manhattan never carry them.

Brooklyn/Queens Home depot has them for a longer season than Whole Foods but not year round. Lowe's in Brooklyn also has them some months of the year.

I think I saw some small bags of wood chips at Crate&Barrel on Houston but I would go through those in about 1 hour so that is not a good option for me.

I've seen bags of Weber chips nearly year round at Vercesi (spelling?) hardware on 23rd, a block or two east of Park Ave South. Upstairs they have a tiny grilling section.

For smoking and long bbq cooks, I think chunks are better than chips, but that's just me....

I always use chunks over chips if I have access to them which is not difficult in the summer at Home Depot and Lowe's.

not in Manhattan (sorry) but I was just at the Lowe's in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and they have both hickory and mesquite chips and chunks. If you leave anywhere downtown, its very easy to get there by subway. Take the F to 4th Ave/Ninth Street, walk over to 12th and down to 2nd ave.
