Babycakes - cupcake review

I am a major fan of cupcakes and take pride in sampling many of the bakeries in lower manhattan.

I went to Babycakes based on the positive reviews on this board. I was seriously disappointed.

Despite some of the most expensive cupcakes around, they were easily the very worst. I tried 3 flavors in an attempt to be thorough. Frosting was like toothpaste on all of them. Cake was average at best. Prolly the carrot cake was the best cakewise but pretty bad really.

I understand that they may be considered a good option for individuals with wheat or gluten allergies. But if you can tolerate eggs, gluten and refined sugar, stick to the other bakeries.

  1. Fascinating! Just goes to show you, there's no accounting for tastes. True, I'm allergic to wheat and have therefore been denied "real" cupcakes for many years. But there's nothing wrong with my tastebuds, and I'm very discerning. I tend to avoid wheat-free knock-offs most of the time, because they are so darn lousy.

But BabyCakes really does the job, in my never humble opinion, including that frosting which tastes like no toothpaste I've ever eaten.

Don't get me wrong -- I don't think taste is something we can argue about. If you like something, you like it, and if you don't like it, no amount of logic or convincing is going to change that fact. It's just, like I said, fascinating, how people can differ so strongly with respect to the same cupcake!

This topic has been covered in other threads but in my neck of the woods (E. Village/LES), I like the sweet, sugar, sunshine bakery.

Pistachio or yellow on yellow are tasty.

as to the OPs opinion (and taking into account there is no accounting for taste), some people are inflated by expectation and popular opinion, and some people eat for reasons beyond taste (and apply to taste opinion associated with senses beside taste). the cupcake is a perfect example of easting for entertainment. it serves no immediate nutritional or survival needs. all that a cupcake needs to be is a party in your mouth. that being written, you obviously have had very few vegan cupcakes in your life. you obviously have had few 'healthy' cupcakes in your life. and if there is a toothpaste that tastes like, and has the texture of the frosting used on cupcakes at babycakes, please let me know where to get some. the OP also had three cupcakes. i have had one on most occasios, and two on certain occasions. the enjoyment is pronounced when the quality is favored over quantity. the morsel which counts most is the very first. the conditions when that morsel is savoured are vital to the feedback of that morsel. take toothpaste and orange juice for example. have you ever had a drink of orange juice soon after brushing your teeth? at least in my mouth, the taste of orange juice at that time is drastically different. as for quantity, i once sampled twenty vegan cheesecakes, in a row. needless to say, writting a review from that experience would offer little as to the qualties of those cheesecakes. it is not by hazard that wine tasters have a limited amount of wine before sensory overload occurs. even the machines that measure scoville units (the measurement of spice related heat a foodstuff produces to the human mouth) require intervals of thirty minutes between samples. machines. perhaps you are a much more developed unit whose palate is wiped fresh after every swallow. and as for being overpriced, certain sectors of agriculture are subsidised (paid for by you and me - assuming we're both paying taxes). an establishment like babycakes uses ingredients made available mostly without the access to the funds allocated to conventinal agriculture. the babycakes babes are pioneers, and thier creations are marvelous. but that's one persons opinion, and there's no accounting for taste.

The cupcake I had at babycakes was pretty bad compared to other cupcakes I've tried. The chocolate flavor was weak, and the icing had the slightly chemical flavor of uncooked cake mix. The fact that it is produced using sustainable ingredients just didn't make it any more delicious. I will tell my friend who is a celiac about the place, but I won't recommend it to others.

I was in NYC 2 weeks ago and LOVED Two Little Red Hens on the UES. Truly delish!! Great cake and buttercream. YUM!

Always like the stuff at Little Red Hens (esp. their Brooklyn Blackout Cake), but the best I've had recently were Chocolate cream-filled and a German chocolate cupcakes from the Little Pie Company.

I really enjoy the cupcakes they have at Cakeshop on Ludlow St between Stanton and Rivington. It's a cafe/record store/live music venue. I don't know if they make the cupcakes there or get them in from a local bakery but they are moist and tasty!

        3. I'll pay good money for their overpriced, lousy tasting cupcakes any day! But I'm a hipster, so why am I eating cupcakes anyways? It's not like I'm an actor or artist, or someone who knows good food!

          1. I keep going back to Babycakes -- and back again and again -- not for the cupcakes but for some of their other treats. Their mini-brownies, for example, are delicious, rich and chocolatey. Their banana-chocolate chip cake is probably my favorite.

            1. re: JulesEV

Yes, those mini-brownies are out of this world.
