Innovative and wacky ice cream?

Now that the weather's getting warmer, I'm craving some wacky and out of this world ice cream. Preferably places that are not widely known or have a special that's a must-try. But whatever comes to mind is Good! Thanks.

This is frozen yogurt, not ice cream, but Forty Carrots (Bloomingdale's basement) has fantastic yogurt-flavored frozen yogurt. That wonderful, sour but sweet flavor of yogurt in froyo form... mmmmmm.

Max & Mina's in Queens has interesting flavors that change - among them cream chees & lox, rugelach, etc.

It's kosher and closed for the Sabbath, so check the hours if you're going to go.

Also, for a real road trip - Capogiro Gelato in Philly. Great!

i tried it the other day...as per chowhounds' recs. tasted quite a few but ended up ordering the black sesame. it was fine. i enjoyed the creamy thick texture but it could have been more flavorful. as well as the other flavors i tasted.

                props on their originality though.

I love getting the sesame and almond cookie together. It's a great combination.

the black sesame and toasted sesame are much more flavorful at il laboratorio than the toasted sesame of chinatown ice cream factory. (but again, it's gelato, not ice cream)

                    rose water f/k/a freddie

I tasted the olive oil gelato at Otto last week for the first time. Not worth enduring Otto for, except perhaps at the bar, but it was a miracle of flavor, texture, and a wicked surprise, little granules of salt coming through occasionally. Incredible and delicious. Don't know if the other Batali joints have it.

gelato, not ice cream, at il laboratorio del gelato. small batches hand made with super fresh ingredients, each flavor perfectly captures the essence of its namesake. i love the toasted almond, the toasted sesame, the cinnamon.

the one con is that they close early, so it can be tough to catch them if you're not from the neighborhood

I second the laboratorio. Recently had green apple sorbet--with apple peel in it!--pistachio gelato, and a divine fresh mint gelato. Vivid flavors, unusual choices.

I went there recently. Very good hazelnut gelato, but that's a standard flavor. Try the malt gelato - it tastes like really good artisanal malted milk balls. I really liked it!

Greek Yogurt, WOW, take that creamy tangy flavor and chill it down...

                            Partner had:

not an ice cream...but the apple celery sorbet at Wallse topped with horseradish was quite interesting. I think they offer it at other Gutenbrunner outposts as well.
