lol! please tell your friend that i knew of several places that made it "live" in columbus, oh in the 1980's for one thing. fresh fermented kombucha tea is certainly even today under the radar of the masses, but it was always a well known house made hippie shop drink. not to mention what other cultures did with it. its somewhat dangerous to make because you can get bacteria and get sick very easily, but the retail boxed brands of the tea are all perfectly safe -- if not as tasty.

You can find it at the Organic Market on the corner of 7th Ave and 26th St. I have never found/seen it at any of the three Whole Foods stores in NYC. Kombucha Wonder Drink, however, and which I have seen at Whole Foods on 14th St., is pasteurized--which means all of the life in it (pro-biotics) has been killed from the heat of pasteurization--so I don't know why anyone would want to bother with drinking something that is the antithesis of what Kombucha is supposed to be (i.e. a pro-biotic). Kombucha is an aquired taste to be sure. I'm looking for the Gingerade version. Haven't found it yet (except online--very expensive--as is the above mentioned).
